Anyone else having Emissions sensor problems?

I'm sitting on my butt right now waiting to get my V back after its 6th or 7th trip to the shop due to the dreaded "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light. My V only has 2500km on it.

Each time I bring it in, they clear it, tell my they've fixed the problem, BUT they have no idea what the problem is. (I'm not even kidding) The first hypothesis was that it was a vent sensor. That was resolved. The second time it was an O2 sensor and some other sensor. They replaced those. Now they tell me its an emission's problem, but they really don't know what to do.

So, after the 5th time in, the manager asked me if he can TAKE MY CAR FOR A WEEK and use it as his personal car. This way, he could play around with it, and solve the problem. He would drive my V to work and back (a 150km trip each way) and have it for a week. Well, of course I said HELL NO. I'm not leaving my poor car to someone who will drive it carelessly and put 300+km per day on it. So they told me to start a log, and record all the driving conditions when/where the light appears. Sometimes it appears right from ignition, sometimes it will be on the highway, sometimes it will be random.

A day later it came back on, and they think that they have solved the problem . They said that from the factory, two "bungs" in some sort of emissions area (at this point I wasn't paying any attention because I was antsy to leave the damn service center) were cross threaded, and needed to be replaced. So I left it there for 2 days so that they can be replaced.

So, if anyone else here gets the recurring service light, this may be the issue. They say it has happened on other Versas as well, but mine came up as a different error, and so it misled them.

I think they should give me a free oil change or something, for wasting so much of my time.

Agreed. I'd check the lemon laws in Ontario. I've put over 40,000 km on my Versa since September and never once had the Check Engine light come on in error.

I've looked up the so-called lemon laws, and apparently there aren't any here.

Instead, we have what's called the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan, which is completely confusing and does not set out any clear standards for who is eligible for reimbursement. Although getting something for my time seems like a great thing, I think it would be too much work and money spent in legal advice, etc.

I'm still waiting for my car, after three days. They tell me they've sent out my intake manifold because the Mexican workers cross threaded some of the plugs and didn't care.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as there ain't soot coming outa the tailpipe you should be ok.

I've had my V since Sept and that light came on once. It went off by itself after about a week - 10 days of driving and hasn't come back on since.

I bet them poking around under the hood has only complicated the matter.Try leaving it for about 3 weeks and see if it goes out by itself.

Mine goes on every now and then as well for a few days, then turns off for a while but then without a doubt, couple weeks later, its back again.

I too am guessing for me its nothing huge but i have been away at school and distant from a nissan dealership so i have not had the time or the means to be able to take it in to have it checked out. I say just let it be, if it were something horrible your car would of already let you know in other ways

Lol, well I'm still waiting today, it's been a week now. They've ordered me a new intake manifold, due to the manufacturing defect.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have the problem solved while the car is under warranty, than try to pay for all of this myself after the warranty is up. Besides, how can you be sure your problems aren't causing any damage without a real inspection?

Internal combustion engines aren't as fragile as it may seem... the only concern I would have is if the sensor was giving the computer incorrect information, causing the engine to run too rich/lean, damaging the catalytic converter, or forcing the computer to run in "open loop" mode (thus damaging the cat). I say if you didn't see plumes of black smoke, you're ok. The only component that could have even remotely suffered would be the cat (covered by an 8-year warranty).

Well, I didn't read all the posts in this thread cause I'm out the door, but my engine light came on because I didn't close the fuel cap all the way...
