Hey guys,

first of all I drive a 3.5 2008 altima coupe.

so last weekend, I get in my car (it was in the high 80's) and I get in my car and turn the air conditioner on. Of course it usually takes a while to start blowing cold air, but I waited about 5 minutes and still wasnt working so I decided I should just open the windows. About 15 mins later, while I was on the highway, I turned it back on to see if it worked. It was still just blowing out what felt like recycled air and since it was so hot, the air was pretty warm too.

I finally got my car into the shop and it took them a day to figure out what was wrong but finally found out that I needed a new compressor.....

Now I'm no expert but I know compressors don't break that easily. It's going to cost me almost a grand and my warranty has expired. I'm not too sure what could have caused this, but I have gotten in one minor (depending on how you look at it) accident. During the winter it was very snowy and like an idiot I went out for a drive and on a VERY sharp turn, I slid off the road into a field. I did also run over a street sign that had been lying there already and did hear a scraping noise that didn't sound too pleasing. But that was about 4-5 months ago...

Any ideas what this could be? Has anyone else had a problem like this? and just to push my luck....any chance that Nissan would fix it for me...for free....

If you want it fixed for free you may be able to depending on how many miles over you are on your warranty. Also, you should get it checked by Nissan anyways just on the safe side.

things like this make me glad I got the extended warranty....

My A/C is out too. Not too big a deal since I work from home. I haven't had it checked, but I know its not low on R134. Then again I have 80K miles on my car so shrug...

idk what is wrong but the usual causes of a compressor failure is either moisture in the system or too much refridgerent in the system. did you have anything done to your ac system?

no not at all, but if you say moisture...there was probably some snow that got into it...but if thats the reason, it happened 4 months ago....

can you buy extended warranty after your warranty is gone?

well if there is no leak on your system then the compressor just failed for some reason which is weird. how do you know you are not low on the R134a? if you had it filled by a shop or something they might have put too much in it which would also cause failure.

moisture will not nessesarily cause imediate failure but i dont know if it would take 4 months but is possible, but since you mentioned hitting something the only thing i can think of is your condensor (?)(similar to a radiator) got a puncture. its right by the radiator so maybe you can visually inspect it(smaller one). please keep in mind im no expert, im just studing auto tech at college

Because I tested it and the pressure was ridiculously high meaning I have R134 but my compressors not on.

Had mine looked at the stealership. They said that the system was pressurized, no leaks found but the compressor clutch was not activating the compressor. Wanted $1200 for the job. I'll be looking around to see if it could be done for closer to half the price. I see compressors online for $350ish. Anyone know how hard to swap yourself? Or how much shop time is needed? Don't really mind not having AC but would like it fixed...
