So I get this smell ...It rains here alot... past few days, I've been noticing - that after a run on the highway, the next few stop lights I get this smell coming in from the vents...

Originally, I thought it was the car in front, but it is definitely mine. It's like a burning smell - not clutch... little like oil, but not as strong.

I go out of the car to sniff around and it is not exhaust... But i do smell it from the FRONT grill***

I'm bringing it into Infiniti... but any thoughts?Any help is appreciated. thx. L

I noticed that same smell from my car last night. I got on it pretty hard about 1/2 block from the house and as soon as I got out it smelled like something burning under the car. Almost like it was a brand new car and the engine or exhaust was burning off some type of factory coating or chemical. But like zozo said, it's a fairly faint smell.

I drive a 2008 G35X (all stock) with 9,500 miles on it. I have noticed this faint "burning oil" smell coming from the vents on several occasions. I don't recall if it was raining each time I've noticed it, but I do know I was not driving the car hard.

Please report back with what the dealer tells you. It seems like several of us have noticed the same issue.

If it smells a little like oil, it could be very small amount of oil, especially if you're driving hard. Oil can get into the lower plenum and into the combustion chamber. Check out the oil catch can thread.

Ummm... Not impressed...Well... they said that they cannot find any oil leaks... so that's that for now.BUT they called me and asked me for authorization - to spend a total of 5 hrs - taking the transmission apart, and put it back together.

- I did mention to my service adv [most rude one I've ever dealt with btw] - that there was a mechanical clunking sound at idle... and when i push my clutch in, it goes away -

So they said they need my authorization because it might be a "wear" issue and I'd be liable for the 5hrs [=$600] if they find that it is a wear issue. I then said to the advisor that I've complained of this sound at least 2 times before - One at 4000 kms [documented] and another time when I did my recall on the clutch slave cylinder.

Anyways... I told him that based on my prev. complaints from right when I got the car brand new, that I would not pay... and then I asked to talked to the service manager. Service manager says the same thing... that if it is a normal wear item... I may have to pay for it unless something is manufactured with defect.---I then said to him... that I might as well pay the $600 now because I now have 40,000kms on the car and it is a clutch! The CLUTCH will of course show some wear - but back at 4000kms when I brought it in for my first service - If you guys fixed it from that point - then I wouldn't have this problem!!!

Anyways... he said to talk to Nissan Infiniti... gave me the 1800 number [wrong one! - gave me roadside assistance -wtf] ... I then got the right 1800 number and then the call ctr person told me that they have to side with the dealership - because she is not a technician and she has to trust the words of the technicians and dealership - - negating my original argument - with a documented orginal complaint from my 1st service. She told me to talk to Gen. manager.

Then I called the sales manager - left msg... never returned it... Then now I'm trying to get a hold of the Gm... Hard to pin down... GRRRRRR!

The sound isn't a big deal... because the car drives fine - great actually... it is just he sound, and the principle! --- this sux... I feel like I've been treated as if I was a the BMW service center - LOL

sorry guys... end rant__

new g37x sedan with 500 miles on it, have the same light burning smell - but not all the time. Can't pin it down to when, though. I think usually when I first start up, but maybe I just get used to it after a few minutes. I'm driving really easy, btw during break in.

Hi there,

I have an '03 6MT G35 that's making a clunking/scraping sound when idling, but not when the clutch is engaged (similar to what you described). It's been happening for a while, and replacing the clutch, flywheel, AND entire transmission did not fix it.

Did you ever find out what was going on?

Many thanks,

NK

We have that burnt oil and/or rubber smell inside the car everytime we park our car inside our garage. It is 2 weeks old so I assumed that it can only be part of the break-in smell. But never had similar experience from our previous bought new cars. You can smell it outside by never inside.
