anyone else got this problem?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I just got my EX about 3 weeks ago.only had about 220 miles on it so far.I just notice this today, when I took it out for a ride.on the steering wheel, where the control buttons are, the black plastic parts. there is a very small minor scratch/chip on there.so that little piece is white now. I mean, its only about 1/16 of a inch long.very small. that made me wonder, will the plastic part of the steering wheel have more scractchs, seems like the base color of that part is white?i mean, if that's the case, its really stupid for them to do that.cus steering wheel is a part that you will use every day, rub, scratch and everything. All you ex owners that had it for a while, did you guys every notice this?

I also have a chip in my steering wheel (see pic below). This is a 2008 EX35 with graphite interior. I think the chip looks gray in my case (the camera flash might make it look a little lighter than it looks in person). Not sure if this is the same part of the steering wheel you're talking about.(I was annoyed at myself when I saw this chip, because I think it was there before I bought the car, but I didn't notice it until a couple days later, so I didn't try to get the dealer to give me a free replacement. There's also some scratches behind the seat that I didn't notice. Next time I'll be sure to do a more thorough examination before signing anything.)

Could you take a Sharpie Felt-Pen to it and give it a quick dab... and then go over it with your Finger so that only the "Hole" is Black, instead of White ?

You are not alone. I got a chip like that on mine as well which I think was caused by finger nail. My concern is there will be a lot more if I am not careful or I have to start wearing gloves driving my EX. I was disappointed that the paint could got scratched off so easily though.

ya, this is bad.I mean, the type of paint they use for the plastic on the steering wheel is the type that will get rubbed off or damaged easily.why would they do that???? we are paying $30k+ on a lexury car, and we get cheap paint that will chip off easily? Come on!!!I've driven a lot of cars, never seen a steering wheel like this before. NEVER!!!!since I only had the car for 3 weeks, if I went back, do you think they will do anything to take care of it?

Yea, I've thought about using an sharpie too.but not sure if the Sharpie will rub off after a while. don't want to get black ink on my hands while driving.are there better paint that can be used to fix something like this?

On my Audi A6 2.7T the headlight knob began losing paint around the 6 month mark and showed a lot of white by 1 year. I asked the dealer to look at it and it was replaced without comment. The replacement lasted 7years without a mark showing. The difference was likely in the part / paint prep - if this becomes an issue with more than one or two of these marks, I'd ask to have it repaired or replaced. This shouldn't wear like this.

ok guys, here is some what of a good news.I called the 800 cusumer affair # on the infinitiusa.com.and told them about what happened, that the paint is wearing off on the steering wheel, and i only had it for less than a month. which I thought was very abnormal, I am planning to keep the car for a while, and don't want it to be all messed up about a year or two.the rep told me that's what my warranty is for, cover anything like that. he created a reference #, and connected to the service manger at the local dealership. the service manager told me to bring the car in at anytime for them to inspect it. and if parts needs to be ordered it can take up to 3 to 5 days.

so, I am going to try drop by the dealership sometime this week to get this taken care of. I hope they won't give me the run around on it.

Any also, all of you that have the similar problem, DO CONTACT YOUR DEALERSHIP, at least let them know the problem!!! because if you don't let them, know they will just think everything is fine, no one ever had problems like this before, so they won't even thinking about making changes or recalls. if enough people complient to them, at least they would relize the problem existed, and maybe take some actions.

because I had cars for years, that none of the internal paint ever rubbed off or chipped. since we paid the extra money for a lexury car, shouldn't it last longer as well????

updates!!

I went into the dealership and show one of the service manager the minor scratch on the steering wheel. She actually told me, she has seen quite a few EX had the same problem. also on the FX some of the plastic parts on the door are the same type of paint. She said as long its within the warranty period they will replace it. As many times as possible!!!what if I keep the car for 7 years? there will be 3 years that's not being covered!!! man...this is stupid. o well, all of you that has this problem and under the warranty, bring it it and get it replaced as often as possible. because that steering wheel part cost about $900+. lets make sure Infiniti relize how stupid the design is, and hope they will change the design!!!

good luck to you all1

i took a long hard look at this piece today. after 2500 miles on the 2010 i have no scratches like that at all...

on further inspection...is the trim around the buttons really paint? it feels so rubbery....it's almost like.....silicone...which would would explain why it's so easy to scratch, but then isn't there an easy fix for that? in the dental lab biz we all sorts of silicone, i wonder if there's touch up silicone for cars.

it's nice that the dealer is willing to replace as many times as necessary tho
