Hi,I have a 1993 Q45 169000 miles, dunno if anyone remembers me...got it off ebay. I been gone fer awhile. Anywho...when i hit the gas pedal the car seems to shake a little, also when i give it gas and the lights in the car seem to go dim intermittingly (like dim bright dim bright dim bright). Since i got the car i still have not checked the timing chain guides (i have a feeling they're not metal) changed the spark plugs to OEM, I've been having to add a quart of oil every month and earlier depending on how much i drive it (i think because of valve cover leak), the smoking has died considerably since i flushed the engine, but it still kicks out a cloud of white smoke when i give it gas from a stop in traffic...and the oil cap seems to get white foamy gunk on it sometimes. Also i changed the air filter but theres a film of oil all over the intake and air filter now. are these symptoms of a dying chain guide or is it all caused by the leaky valve cover? or anything anyone can suggest? (junk it?)

Thanks in advance, Chi

P.S.the cottman's transmission is running strong! had a huge transmission cooler put in parrallel with the radiator looks like i have 2 radiators now...no leaks from the transmission runs great shifts smooth...but the transmission kicks going into reverse...they said it was normal for a big car?

ooops sorry maybe this should be moved to the mechanics

p.p.s.

the new fuel pump works great still...i'd hate to junk it since the new (used) transmission, plugs, pump, filters, flush the car runs great except for the problems above....also crappy gas mileage OMG like 9 miles per gallon sucks

your problems don't sound at all like the chain guides, in fact, positive they're not. there is little to no warning when they go, and you may not know it if one is gone (will know it when the chain jumps, though!!!! OUCH). not sure of the symptoms you describe, but someone will definitly be along shortly to give you the verdict. sorry to say, doesn't sound good :(hang in there, though!!!!!

Get a can of Gunk, and clean that engine bay. Then you might be able to find the oil leaks.

The valve cover leak can be fixed, in about 5 hours of work, one Saturday. Get the Nissan Silicone. Buy all your parts from Joe @ INFINTIPARTSUSA.com

Try some oil smoke eliminator. My partner has an Acura, with 278,000 miles, and he stopped his smoke with that stuff.

Try fixing one thing at a time.

Sounds like you are making some headway. Don't give up, now.

The oil in the air filter sounds like either engine blow-by (bad valves seals or rings) or a bad PCV valve. Try replacing the valve for $10 and see what happens. The rocker covers would have to be leaking really badly to account for 1qt per month, unless you're doing a lot of driving. How many miles do you average in a month?

i hardly drive it...it sat for 2 weeks with a blown tire last month...since i've had the car i'd say i put at the most 800 miles and i've had it for about 3 and a half months now...i got 4 new tires from goodyear they said h rated tire...they were like 4 for 400. they had a sale going buy 3 get 1 free. sound like my tax return is going towards the car...it drives great (holy crap the car picks up fast and takes corners like it was nuffin!!!) but these problems are scaring me...i was thinking either fix it or trade/sell it buy another car...and everytime i start the car and go into drive i hear this loud screech from the abs...i think that needs replaced too...thanks for the replies.

The screech might just be belts. If your car is leaking some oil, then it might be getting on the belts, too.

I had a belt tensioner go out on me. It started wit ha few squeels, then the bearing went, and the car sounded like a diesel engine. $75 from the dealership, and 1.0 hours to install.

It sounds like the previous owner did no maintenance onthe car. If you intend to keep the car for a few years, spend the time and money, to fix it up.

i could swear its the abs cause i've been having to add brake fluid a few times since i've had the car...sorry i can't describe the noise though...cause i know the belt noise is like *REEEEEE* but this is like a *scraaaaw* then goes away...it does it for a second...I'm gonna try replacing the PCV valve like Q451990 said...remember the tubes of nissan RTV i got off ebay Jeff? I got like 4 tubes of it and they're still soft and pliable still, i have to wait till it gets warmer here then i'm gonna tackle the valve covers. so is there anything else i should get for the valve covers?...and No one knows why my lights are dimming intermittingly? Thanks again for the replies you guys ROCK

ABS makes noise/feels during the first motion of car after starting - just be aware of that.

I just replaced (with the help of the members here) the 3 pulleys and you would not believe the sorts of sounds my car used to play - just about all kinds of noises would come and go - some at start, some at speeding, some at idling.

Remember there are 3 pulleys that can be in different stages of going Kaput - and can play all sorts of sounds while they are on their way out. Based on the sounds coming out, I thought my car is on the way to graveyard. Coworkers used to give me stares while I pulled in and out of the parking lot...

When I took out my 3 pulleys (92Q with 114K) - the PS was totally shot - it was seized and burned up the PS belt on its last startup. The main pulley (crank shaft?) bearing was shot - it was clicking if you move it - the last pulley (whatever it is called) was half way jamming - difficult to move freely.

I think I paid about 90-100 bucks to Scottsadale for all 3 pulleys.

"SCRAAAAW" That does sound like the pulley tensioners. Take a hard look at them, with the engine running, to see if you see any movement.

You might be able to loosen al lthe tensioners (30 minutes), then check the integrity of the bearings.

Definitely get them from Joe. They are a "dealership only" part. They come with the adjuster bolt, and the center bolt/washers/nut. Pay close attention, as to how the spacers come off.

You might be able to remove them, and press out the old bearing, and find a new bearing that can be pressed in, but it is not worth it.

You obviously haven't followed the normal requirement of spending $3,000-$5,000 [to fix all the things wrong] when buying a used 90-93Q.......170,000 miler. Why they get sold in the first place.

Take it to the dealer have them [pay them a few hours] to give you a full list everything they find wrong. Then we can help you perform triage.

Napa can supply idler pulley bearing 6301-22J for early Q45, I think $8 apiece.$25 vs. $90+? Not too difficult to r&r.

Light going dim when accelerating, points to the Alternator Belt slipping.Fix all the OIl leaks, check all the pulleys etc & make sure the belt tensions are correct... for starters.

Thanks for the replies,Sorry I have not spent the amount of money to get it checked when i bought it off ebay. I was lead to believe there wasn't going to be anything wrong with the car. Wish i knew about you guys before i even bought the car. Already dropped total about $3,000 in the car since i bought it...it runs 10 times better than it did before it hit my hands. So i tried gett'n a pvc valve an these franchise auto stores are telling me its a dealer part...i'm going to get a local infiniti dealer to check the pulleys and such on the car next weekend...i made a list of everything wrong with the car i an tell that needs to be addressed asap-steering is hard unless i'm accelerating-brake fluid definitely leaking-burning oil -valve leak-lights going dim while accelerating-chain guide needs to be checked-black oil soot all over the air filter and intake

things that i have fixed/replaced/installed-transmission-transmission cooler-transmission flush-engine flush-radiator flush-spark plugs-fuel pump-fuel filter/ lines-brake lights-4 tires-and had the engine and interior detailed (looked like some kinda food syrup blood? dried up all over the inside)
