I also asked this on the tech forum and was referred to the FSM, but anyone actually done the job recently? Thanks

I am trying to replace the plugs on my 03 I35. The ones on the front of the engine are no problem. Those on the back, ha ha, seem pretty tricky. I have searched the forum on an FAQ but came up empty.Anyone know of a writeup on this? Anyone done this, does the intake manifold need to be removed??

We own a 02 I35, and my father recently replaced the plugs. He did infact remove the intake manifold when doing so. If it wasn't so cold when he did it I would have helped, but I can ask him about any tricky spots/how he did it.

That would be great.

I've owned a few cars before, but never heard of removing an intake manifold to replcae spark plugs. Anyone know the book time on this job/what the shop would charge?

Thanks

You do have to remove the upper intake manifold since it obstructs access to the rear plugs. It's not a horrible deal, though, and doable if you have some mechanical experience. Make sure to keep track of all the lines/connectors you disconnect (having a copy of the FSM or a chilton/haynes guide on hand would probably be beneficial here). I also recommend buying a new manifold gasket rather than reusing the old one. I think they go for about $20.

Got it, thanks.

I'll probably take it to a shop and have it done. What do you think is a fair price for the mechanic to change the plugs?

thanks

there's no need to take it to a mechanic, it's not hard to do at all. alberta boy actually posted a link for changing plugs on an '02 which is exactly the same as an '03 3.5 . http://www.vqpower.com/v2/read...id=27 he's got pix for the whole thing. worked for me
