Just curious how many people tether to their phones for internet connection on the go.

Or even one of the dedicated wwan cards that the cell phone providers have.

I'm interested to see what kind of speed you're getting.

Here's mine with -83dB signal:

This is in the outskirts of Milwaukee tethered wirelessly to my MyTouch 3G running Android 2.2. Before I was running Android 2.1 and barely hit 2Mbps

I have a mytouch 3g but I just picked it up and know hardly anything about it. My phone info says i am running software 1.6. I assume this needs to be updated? Like I said I know nada about the cell phone stuff. Should I unlock and mod it somehow or is that possible with this phone. I had an iphone that I jailbroke and that was super simple.

Check out the XDA forum.

There actually isn't a newer version then 1.6 for this phone officially. I am running modified version.

What you want to do is look up the "one click" rooting method for the phone if you choose to root it. You'll first need to downgrade to the official 1.5 version to perform the one click root. Once this is done you can flash any rom from the G1/Dream. I'm currently running Cyanogen's modified rom.

The biggest feature you gain is the ability to tether your computer to your phone to use the data service.

I really depends soley on the area.

My friend with 5 bars in Newark NJ gets 4Mbs down / 1Mbs up while in my home town he gets 9Mbs down / 4Mbs up. He did this on Tmobile's 3G network with a TouchPro 2

Like 1 to 2 mbit if the signal is good. If Im far from the tower I get a pretty darn slow signal, but it beats nothing. I'm tethered on my Blackberry Tour here in San Antonio with a program called Tether.

I use my Blackberry Bold with T-Mobile and get about 2mb. T-Mobile does not require a tethering plan.

I did. Then my phone shut off once during it. Now I will only tether if it's an emergency.

How can the provider know if you use data on cell or tether ?
