well i just bought a 91 240sx. just the shell. so i am in the market for an engine. a CA18det. i have my own reasons for choosing this engine and i have done alot of research about it and other engines and this fits my needs. i have seen and read about alot of sites. searching here only pulls up a year or two old threads. so which sites still sell sh!tty/bad motors and bad customer service and which have improved or would recommend now? i dont want to hit up egay. (they are either hit or miss)

thanks for yur inputs. :bigthumb:

not trying to busrt your bubble here but parts for a CA are much more scarce and from what I have seen, more expensive.

Good luck if you do stick with the CA though

You can get parts for the CA at any autoparts store. The CA had a USDM counterpart. Its just the aftermarket support isnt as good as some of the other motors, but its still out there if you look.

To the OP: Cant help you on any websites, I bought mine from a private party through CL. Btw great choice going with the CA.

I'm east Coast, so I use JDM engine depot. Ive been there in person a few times and those guys are pretty good. It's not really up to any dealer to have "good or bad" motors. All they do is turn the motor over with a wrench, and feel the compression to see if it's good.. So you take a chance pretty much where ever you buy it from.

Which is why you should be replacing a lot of stuff prior to installing the motor.

Unless you find someone locally on Craigslist or something who has a running motor they want to sell.

Good luck with the 240.

CA parts are hard to find and expensive. Badass engine don't get me wrong. If you plan on going die hard CA, plan on spending some money for a rebuild + the whole works. By the time you did that you could go RB,LS1,KA-T,SR and have some available parts when your ride goes down. I seen one CA with a T3 Turbo on 10psi run and I tell you what it hauled some balls. Beat stock T25 BPU SR's running 15 psi like nothing lol. All in the tuning.

There is a guy here locally is stuck on a CA also. He is trying to put it in a older Datsun 510. If you find one give a feedback.

Good luck with the swap and great motor choice!

I just bought and swapped a ca18det into my 90 hatch back in september or so... i did tons of research on importers and i found the best place was in virginia called J.E.I .

I didnt want a canadian company cuz if anything went wrong i didnt want to go on a cat and mouse over a border lol. Im from jersey and i drove down and it was the cleanest motorset ever! 155 over all cylinders. And the customer service was amazing!

I have 3 importers all less then 10 min from me yet they didny have what i luked in a company, especially dealing with a underdog ca18.
jdm engine depot was one if em, and not to give them negative feedback but unleas its a honda motor id steer away.

As for aftermarket parts, theres plentyyyyyy of places that have em....frsports is amazing! And enjuku, i havent had an issue sourcing parts yet, just do ur research cuz a ton of ka and sr parts are compatible with the ca18.

Hope this helps and keep us posted

Have you ever owned a CA? Because CA parts are really not hard to find. Most maintenance parts you can find at your local parts store. You just use old pulsar (ca18de) parts, or a few s12 (ca18et) parts. Its almost as easy as finding KA parts since the JDM CA has a USDM counterpart that has crossover parts. We have a whole cross reference list in the CA forum of USDM parts that are compatible with the JDM CA. So basically all I have to do when my CA breaks down is go to NAPA, which is neither hard to find or expensive. And a stock rebuild kit is a whole 400 bucks. So I dont see how that adds up to a $10,000 ls1 swap, or a 6k rb25 swap. If you rebuild a CA you will be around the same cost as a stock SR swap (non-rebuilt). I think people are just really misinformed on the CA engine series thinking that since its old it is super expensive and parts are rare. But in reality parts are easy to find and aftermarket parts are really not that rare either if you spend a little bit of time looking. I just wanted to clear that up dude.

Frankenfourty is right. Anytime I need something for my CA I just head on down to Napa. Can't do that with an SR or RB.

actually, you CAN do that with an sr. not so much with an rb, although some vg parts can be used, but not many at all.

No, I haven't owned a CA don't ever plan to lol. I have my reasons and I'm really not going to get into it. I'll go KA-T / RB before I ever touch a CA. Cool congrats go to NAPA and get your parts. SR parts can be found just as easy as a KA. You have to know your connections and interchangeable USDM/JDM parts. Or buy spare parts on the side so you can be back up and running.

Nothing wrong with that. The CA isn't for everyone. The other motors you listed are good motors, its all in personal preference.
