No, the wiring of the 1997-1998 180SX was changed. They are tuned to the same specs as the other ECU's, they just happen to give off different signals at pinouts. If you attempt to put the J5 or J6 on a 1991-1996 S13 SR20DET, it will run off the first cylinder only. I am not sure what happens if you try to run your late model blacktop off the E5 ECU but I imagine it will probably do what Jeff said.
Here is a rundown I made up for another site:1991-1994 = ECU 62 (manual - 23710 50F00) and 63 (auto 23710 50F10) for S13 Redtops that came in S13 Silvia's and 180SX's.
1995-1996 = ECU E5 (manual - 23710 50F05) and E6 (auto - 23710 50F15) for S13 Blacktops that came in 180SX's.
1997-1998 = ECU J4 (manual - 23710 60F06) and J5 (auto - 23710 60F16) for S13 Blacktops that came in 180SX's.
