Should I be the one? Nah, I'll be nice. I'll even explain to you to best of my knowledge why powerbraking works on automatic but not manual. So in an automatic the torque converter (simply put, a unit with very thick liquid in it) allows for its two ends to spin at different speeds. This is necesary so the car doesn't stall when it's stopped. So when you powerbrake, one side of the torque converter is kept still by the brakes, while the other side is spinning because of the engine. This only works up to a certain RPM but it allows you to get your engine speed up without moving.
Now in a manual car, a clutch (two or more plates that can be seperated) kind of replaces the turque converter and since the clutch is very much a solid and not at all a liquid, the only way that its two ends can spin at different speeds is if the clutch is slipping. Slipping alot or for a longer period of time will burn your clutch. So, yes, you were burning your clutch.
Now onto how to light up your tires. Easiest way would be to hold the clutch, rev the engine to about 4000, let go of the clutch. Then work on that.
EDIT: 574-240sx beat me to it, ohh well.
