My brother is in the AF. He joined about 10-12 yers ago and really likes it. Well, except when he was in Bosnia, Kabul (Afghanistan) or near the DMZ. I guess that woud be the downside, that and the hours/physical work. Expect someone to chime in with how the AF doesn't have any real physical work, and you have one of the benefits :).

Don't know what he makes, but I know he's happy, just re-upped April last year.

I've thought about it, taken the ASVAB, etc etc. My friend is going to join sometime next summer I Think. I believe it would be a good thing to do from what I have seen/read/heard.

Im in now, almost at 7 years, overall it has been a good thing. People back home all say I have changed for the better, even though none of them can name the changes.

I have been all over the States, Japan, Korea, Germany, England, and now I live in Italy.

I am a Munitions Systems Journeyman, AKA Ammo troop, basically I build, store, maintain, move, deliver, inspect all things that go boom. My job is not really physically hard, it can be sometimes. Exercises happen every 3-4 months depending on where you are, and sometimes you have to wear chem-gear (sucks in the summer).

Anything else?

Im thinking about the Air Force right now, I want to go to college though, can you go to college while in the Air Force or would you have to go after? How long are you in it when you sign up?

You can go to college while in, my father went to the Universty of Maryland while Active duty. sometimes though, i have heard stories that you can not go to college till after 2 years of service, and i think the minimum you have to sign up is 4 years. My father was in the air force for 27 years and just retired this summer. All in all i think he would say it was a good experience, he grew up in oxyford mississippi and never left the state till he Joined after he graduated high school. Now he has to been to every continent (except antartica) and use to go TDY every month. We grew up overseas, i was rasied in Japan and i think that kids growing up in other culutres makes them real rounded. When he retired he took a month long vacation (for free) all over asia using Space-A. I am a freshman in college right now and plan on joining after i graduate

You can attend college classes (for free) after about a year.

There are different enlistment times, 4 or 6 years.

The following is all right as far as I know:

4 year enlistment = Signing bonus + E-2 rank6 year enlistment = Big signing bonus + E-3 Rank

My bro is a USAF pilot. He's enjoyed it very much, but he's been stuck in Enid Oklahoma for about 3 years now. I can attest to the fact that Enid is amongst the WORST places to be stationed in the military. I went to visit him for a week last spring. There is literally NOTHING there except dirt and Vance AFB.

He's about to get out of the Air Force some time in early or mid 2004. They have treated him quite well and I'm pretty sure he has no regrets. But, being an officer, he gets a lot more perks than the average enlisted schmo. If I were you... go to college first, then go into Officer Training School... or even go through ROTC or whatever the AF's version is. Life as an officer is MUCH better than elisted.
