i suggest finding an extra pair first from a salvage yard or something then start playing around. I haven't looked at it close so there might be some things you could do. I know the max/I30 guys were throwing theirs in ovens and peeling off a layer of film inside the lenses to change the color, but the J's tails might be competely different. If you do it, you'd probably be the first. Give it a shot!

well the trick is not to get it THAT warm that it melts. Just get it warm enough the film will come off. Some people say they can do it with a heat gun or even a blow dryer after a significant amount of time. Regardless that's why I suggested getting a second set first.

mayhem is right. i took mine off and checked them out about a year ago. got the adhesive loose with a heat gun.

no one makes different tailights for the J30 now, and no one ever will.

In the interests of safety I would like to see all cars equipped with amber turn signals. They stand out at much better than all the other red tail lights and more clearly demonstrate one's intentions (if they're used at all:mad: ).

That's interesting... I've thought of this for the Q if I ever get the LED system up and running. The Caterras look pretty cool with clear lenses and then those really bright amber LEDs when the signal is on. I think it would look cool to have the amber changed to a medium smoke color with the amber LEDs behind it.

On the Q the housings have a plastic diffuser between the bulb area and the lens... would the tinted color film be behind that?

typically it's clear. just throw in an amber bulb and you'd be set. that's one of the things i like the most about the I30 are the clear rear turn signals. The plastic is clear so it always looks good but it's got the amber/yellow bulb.

interestingly mentioned, my GF will NOT buy a car unless it has the yellow rear lights. She can't stand the one red light does it all format domestic cars seem to cater to. I've never thought about it before until she complained and I agree. There should be a color difference on all cars.

first of all there is a clear outer layerthen next layer in is attached to the clear outer layer by adhesive. this is the yellow or red colored layerthe next layer is the lens/ fresnel component (which is clear)

so, it should be possible. buy some scrap ones and mess with those just in case.

diamond,

good to hear your still working on your project. send us some pics once you get that mold all set. i would love to have a lower rear bumper with a roll pan if it turns out well...that is, if your interested in marketing your product...(that assumes its marketable, hehe) good luck.
