Any tips to make my car more competitive in my class?

So with only coilovers, strut bars, 300z brakes (only in the front), watanabe wheels, lsd, and an intake. Ive bumped my car into the modified category.(my club assigns points to mods; number of points = class)Total Points Category0-2 Stays in Stock Category3-7 Bump to Prepared Category8-17 Bump to Modified Category18 and over Bump to Race Category

However I dont feel that my mods are necesarily the best mods to give my car the best edge in the modified category, as their are some dedicated autoXers that pick mods to maximize categories. and seeing how this is only my 2nd season, and im still honing my driving skills, does anybody have any other tips to not come in last in my class? oh and I will be running falken azenies tires this season.

sounds like a decent setup for now, a lot like mine actually. I'd say just work on improving the driver, not the car. That's what I'll be working on while I build my rb20 back up.

Agree. Improving your skills is the best bang for the buck mod.

thats the plan by the end of the season anyway!

After digging around some I saw the that grassroots motorsports about that 240 that won the championship.

So I wont be ordering azenies now, but bridgestones 01R's and will dial in some more negaitve camber...

The Azenis are fine for what you're doing, the Potenza's aren't worth the extra cost.

I would take off the strut bars and 300Z brakes if it gets you into the lower Prepared category - neither of those two things are helping you at the autocross.

Your car could probably be competitive in the SCCA's "STX" class for which it is legal, even with the strut bars and brakes. If they have any events near you you could give that a try.

UH... What?

the potenzas are the same price (technically CHEAPER not including shipping)$135 a piece for the azenies at discount tire$133 a piece for the potenzas at tirerack.

and they are flat out a better tire.

Same as what j-rho said. If you're a just a couple points above prepared cut back the mods that don't help. As for the rubber I've heard the Falkens are better in slaloms and response but Potenza's are better on sweepers and grip. Of course mroe seat time...

youre in SM i take it?

is there still a minimum treadwear of 140 there or are you allowed to step up to something lower...if so you might look into getting techR's or a similar DOT slick

They use the Midwest council's rule book.

basically they find what class your car is from the scca rule book A through H then just slap a S, P, M, or R at the end of the car class based on mods

ok it looks like the letter system is based on the scca's road racing classes instead of their auto-x classes

alright then i guess my question would be how many points do you already have (obviously more than 8) and where is the chart that gives the number of points per specific mods

if they give a list of what mods cost what points itd be pretty easy to pick out stuff you can still do

Get rid of the 300zx brakes and the strut bars. They're useless at an autocross. Use the points for swaybars.

Get rid of weight if possible.

believe me, ive been thinking about getting rid of the z32 brakes... they have caused me nothing but trouble ordering replacement parts (previous owner mod)

THe only thing is that wouldnt that mean i would have to go back to 4 lug?i dont want to loose my 5 lugs because i have mutliple sets of 5 lug wheels.

You can get the S14 5 lug rotors and use the stock caliper. Hope this helps. Currently I'm using the S13 JDM calipers(Maxima calipers) with the Maxima's rotors.

Seat time, stop worrying about the car so much and concentrate on you and what you are actually capable of, so many people actually forget thats its teh driver moving the car through the cones, not the car itself.

sign up for more auto-x's and youll prolly see results if you focus on nothign but improving your line over trying to beat everyone in your class.
