This is the mod I did to my rears to get 6.5" speakers to fit. I have seen a lot of stuff where 6x9s have been plunked behind the plastic trim at elbow level of the rear seats... But from looking at the metal speaker basket, there wouldn't be any way to cut it to hold a 6x9.

zer...lcome

Most audiophiles will tell you (I don't really have a preference) that 6x9's produce an inferior sound quality to 6.5" speakers, I think due to the way sound waves are reproduced.

I have 6.5" speakers at all 4 corners with a 350x4 Kicker amp, and it sounds incredible. I also had 6x9's in the rear of my Camry, and it didn't seem to sound much worse...

You would get better responses/suggestions in the audio forum. You should be able to mount the 6.5 to the rear metal bracket. IIRC, when I removed the rear speaker plastic mount the hole left in the metal bracket was about that of a 5x7. I have no speakers back there though. Only components up front and a sub out back. Take your grill and surrounding trim plastic off, then remove the yellowish plastic piece holding the stock speaker, measure the hole in the metal bracket, measure your 6.5 mounting points, or cut out the hole to accomodate the 6x9 (I think there's enough material there to trim out) and install.

In retrospect on my project, I would have had an easier time trying to bolt it to the metal tray, then I wouldn't have had to trim so much of the plastic cover.

So if you were going with 6.5" speakers, I would try it without the plastic adapter. If you do need to buy it, look on ebay (only place I found them) and I think they are $15 a pair

I have a '91 coupe with 6x9's in it and I saw the car's structure and was like oh crap... but i wound up just cutting the little fiberboard cover thing and making half inch thick bezels to mount them on and now my speakers clear it fine.

Not sure how they sound there, but I'm sure they are louder since the hatch glass is right there. I've seen several members do this and they like it, but personally, I don't like people being able to see the speakers plain as day though. I'd mount them on the brackets after putting some Dynamat Extreme (or equivalent) on the metal after trimming it. But that's just me.

I assume by your first post you have a hatchback, otherwise this doesn't apply

My 6.5" speaker sound good, but they have only been powered by the amp. I tried running them off the stock speakers, but the wire must have been bad... Not sure on the write-up on removing the panels, but first offRemove:1) Rear Seats, top and bottom (the tops are held in by two L-shaped brackets on either side, so un-screw from the back of the seat (the trunk part, there are 2 screws, try it with a 10mm socket so you don't strip them) first, then unbolt it from the frame at the bottom of the plastic trim piece.

2) The lower section I believe comes out first, but it will be pretty obvious when you look at how it lines up with the other sections. Just be gentle when pulling so you don't lose the retainer clips.

3) The upper plastic section covers some of the screws in the speaker cover, so this is 3rd. A couple of screws here I think, just underneath the top of the glass on the hatch. They have covers, so flathead those off, then take the screws out.

4) The cover to the speaker is held on by 4 retainer clips, gently pop it off with a flathead.

5) Getting the plastic cover off is a little more complicated, there are 3 screws, one is above the little cover for the rear shocks. You might have to bend out the fabric since you can't remove the rivet without damaging it. The other screw is just below where the strut that holds the hatch up.

There is a wiring diagram somewhere on the positive/negative color codes for the speakers, mine had the crap factory amps, and you might have to splice new connectors onto the ends. I wouldn't bother trying to re-use the amps, its a crappy 5 watts, and the amp in an aftermarket deck should be a bigger improvement anyway.

The bezels that I made work pretty good, of course mine is a coupe so it's gonna be a little different, but all you need is space to clear the frame of the speaker and the magnet, other than that there's not really much to it. They also sound great, even though I don't have front speakers.

Originally, I just put them in my privacy cover (6x9), but after I got my sub, it was too tall.

I just pulled the speakers out of the rear deck and extended the speaker wires. Then I got some 6x9 speaker boxes and tucked them next to the sub.

Here's a crappy Iphone pic. I have all the wires tucked and everything leaned up now.The speakers are tucked in back where the sub is now. Fits perfectly.
