Just purchased a new Rogue SL AWD completely loaded on Saturday, May 24th. Drove it five times and on Wednesday, May 28th, I was driving in town and after pulling from a stop sign, the car lost power (stayed on), my VCM (vehicle control module) and Check Engine lights both came on. I pulled over and turned the car off/on again. The VCM light was out but the check engine light did not. Took it up to the dealership who could have given half a crap about it. They had it for 1 1/2 hours and (after I called them to find out what was wrong) said the VCM module "must have been loose" from the factory install, that its happened a few times in other Nissans, and that they'd "triple checked" it and now everything was fine.

I'm trying to find if anyone else has had these experiences. I am concerned that if it had happened on the highway, I would have been rear-ended and God-knows-what might have happened after that.

I'm seeking legal recourse with the dealer (who could care less about all of this..."this kind of thing happens...") but like I said, am looking for any other similar experiences.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if I totally understand - are you saying you don't feel confident that the dealer corrected the problem? It sounds like you had an unfortunate problem, the dealer corrected it and now everything is running well, but you are seeking legal action because you are dis-satisfied with the attitude of the dealer and feel the problem may occur again? That really sucks but if they said the problem is corrected why not trust their expertise and continue on? (I'm not trying to make light of the situation, just trying to understand a little better).

I can only recall one other instance of a Rogue that would not start due to an electrical issue. It was with a different module (IPDM):

There is no 'VCM module' on the Rogue. You (or the dealer) must be referring to the BCM (Body Control Module). It controls most of the vehicles functions (except the engine) including lighting, wipers, the Intelligent key, and most importantly: the anti-theft/immobilizer system. Without the anti-theft system working, the Rogue will not start or run and I imagine you will get the symptoms you describe.

I cannot speak for the dealer, but from the sounds of it this was likely a simple fix for them and it should not re-occur. This was likely a fluke incident as no one else besides the post I mentioned above has reported this issue.

Thanks for the feedback. I did talk to the salesman yesterday who informed me that it had just happened the week prior to someone else who got a brand-new Rogue. He confirmed it is a VCM - I really don't care, I just want to be sure that this isn't a known fault/recurring fault with the vehicle.

As far as legal action, I am just trying to gather information to see if I should do more than just keep this incident "on record" as the first (and hopefully only) failure of this unit.

I guess I'm just frustrated with a dealership (who I thought was pretty reliable) not really giving a crap about this happening. The worst part is the owner of the dealership told me that this had only happened a few times before with other Nissan vehicles and not with the Rogue and then my salesman tells me a Rogue did it last week...arghhh. I will be pealing the dealership's ID sticker off the rear of the car.

On a bright note, I did find this forum and I've been learning a boatload of other stuff to know about my Rogue (that I really did a lot of research on before buying and really do like).

Thanks again.

That's another problem not really similar to mine but sounds similar. A few months ago I started to hear loud metal vibration when I start the car. After spending an hour in a shop mechanic told me that heat shield was loose. How these parts could be loose originally from mfg? Rogue is just too new to buy it. Nissan does not want to approve it.

Wow, I had nearly exactly the same issue happen to me yesterday. I was parked with the engine off waiting for a friend, I started up the Rogue and put it into drive, pushed the gas and it kind of rolled out of its spot. I thought I had forgotten to start the car or something, but it was running. The Check Engine light, VLC/VCM (V-something) light, and the traction control lights were all on. I shut off the car and opened up the hood, but nothing seemed wrong. All my fluids were ok, and there wasn't any smell or leaking fluid anywhere. After a few minutes I started it back up and the other lights had turned off, but the check engine light was still on. I was able to drive away, but I kept it under 2k RPM and drove 5 under the limit all the way home. What a way to start a long weekend.

I'm a bit nervous because I don't have a warranty on this car due to my buying it in the US and bringing it to Canada. Did you have the same symptoms? I'm scared to drive it anywhere, but I'll probably end up taking it to a dealer to check out the check engine light.

So the dealership blamed the daytime running lights installed by the US dealer as causing the problem. Apparently everything was fine and just required a 'reboot' of the car, and a reset of the check engine light.

Cars should now come with a CTRL-ALT-DEL button.
