I only have my timing to 32BTDC, but I also use iridium plugs, and SAFC to have a mixture closer 12.7:1.... I use to run closer to stoich when my timing wasd at 23BTDC....As you advance timing you increase the flame front of the combustion process, and it isn't recommended to do without making the proper adjustments. Even the knock sensor does retard timing a tad the ecu dumps more fuel to compensate for knock as well it can throw throttle responce and acceleration off if not done correctly. As for your friends fully advancing the distributor you can tell them that they are morons. It splits the GAP time between actual ignition timing and the time spark reaches the rotor pin actually reducing spark which will decrease low end power, and increase the EGT as RPM's increase. The ecu already pre determines when ignition timing is calculated and as RPM's increase the ecu advances the timing for you. When you manually adjust timing at the distributor you are just fooling the ecu and the engine to the time when it would originally spark....When increasing the ignition timing you will have to also use a higher octane rating with less heptane. Heptane burns fast, octane burns slow. So more than likely a higher octane needs to be used and no less than 91octane. I use 91 on the street, and I use 96octane on the track.
