California's gross polluter law offers anyone whose car is on the gross polluters list $1000 to retire their car if it fails smog test, or up to $500 to fix it if you want to keep the car. However the car must be registered and be able to move under its own power. Any pre 1996 J30 is on the list.

Doesn't the list cover all preOBD2 V8 and heavy V6 vehicles. Easy to make a failure by disconnecting or plugging EGR.

Shoot $1000 is a deal and much more than a junkyard will pay, better than wholesale at a auction.

Guy I work with got a 3K credit for his 1992 Ford ranger when he bought his Tahoe

But he has 4 kids so he was a good bit under the income threshold

I think I am going to give this program a shot. Any tips on how to FAIL a smog test?

A couple of things I didn't mention. Your registration renewal notice must direct you to a test only smog test station. There also may be income limits, check before you purposely fail.

Well I looked into it and there were no income requirements, or testing location requirements for the car retirement program in CA. Those dealt with the financial assistance for repairs.

Well anyway I unplugged my egr and went to get my smog checked. And of course my trusted J30 PASSED without any problems. My J's got 164000 mi, drivers side door won't open, and periodically will run rough and sometimes die, so $1000 was looking real good to me. Oh well, 2 more years with the J!
