So it's out and now I've had a chance to listen to it for a bit, I thought I'd post up a review.
Overall I really like this CD. It's very different, and yet there's still a lot of very distinct Korn sound to it. It took a bit of getting used to, and I still miss "the old Korn" but I definitely can't say I'm disappointed with "Korn 8."
A lot of fans don't like the move to more electronically-involved music. I personally don't care what they use to make the music...good music is good music. And it's not like they're using electronics to compensate for a lack of talent. How many other rock artists put out albums using (real, not synthesised) mandolins and bagpipes?
The sound has evolved to a sort of metal/rock/goth melding. It builds on the sort of "off" eerie darkness that under-wrote their last album. But it also lacks a lot of the good headbanging, powerhouse feel that some earlier albums/songs had (There's no Got the Life or Thoughtless to be found here).
Also, I think the lyrics of a couple songs are pretty basic and disappointing from Korn. A few lines are a bit to emo/angsty for me--something I always liked that Korn never needed in the past. Even when their older songs discussed things like love and other emotional subjects they did it in a way that didn't feel whiny and made you think "Yeah, dammit!" instead of the sadder tone the new album takes at times.
The CD is also disappointingly lacking in one of my favorite Korn trademarks:Fieldy's sloppy, clanky bass style. The new music is a bit too "clean."
A few individual songs dissected:
Starting Over:This one still feels "progressive" but really makes me think of "Follow the Leader" and has a rolling guitar riff that's very reminiscent of "*** Itch" (which might be the best song on Peachy).
Kiss:Lyrics get a bit emo, but the music is spectacular, and it has a lot of the "old Korn" feel to the vocals.
Do What They Say:Very cool cinematic feeling song. Reminds me of the stuff Davis did for Queen of the Damned. It's got a good overhanging atmosphere. It feels like a song you would open a movie with.
Love and Luxury:Interesting song. Very upbeat and almost boppy, but I like it. The interlude reminds me of Open Up from SYOTOS.
Hushabye:Awesome. Probably the most "powerful" song on the album. The mandolin is awesome. Vocals are great. Guitar is hard and perfectly fuzzy. Drums are not overdone.
I will protect you:This one's weird. It's simultaneously one of the best and worst songs on the disc. The chorus and interlude are awesome. The rest is boring and atypically thin sounding for Korn. You spend your time waiting for the verses to end so you can hear the good parts.
