it's called a differential because it allows the wheels to turn at different speeds.why is this required? because they're traveling different diameter circles, so the outside tire has to keep up with the inside tire because it has more distance to cover in the same amount of time.
here's the fun partas the circle gets wider, the difference between the two paths gets smaller, until a point where the two wheel speeds are nearly identical. that is why welded diffs make the tires chirp in u turns and parking lots, but not in any kind of real driving.
in u turns and parking lots, you're not putting nearly enough pressure on the tires to wear them out by chirping.
in normal driving, you're pretty close to the point where the tire speeds would be very similar anyway, so tire wear is minimal.
the conclusion:tires do wear faster, but not nearly as fast and some people have you believe.you're more likely to wear them out with camber wear before the welded diff does them in.
and if you're using the car for drifting, you're going to wear out the tires in less than a day anyway, so who cares?
