Yes, I do mean racing cars on frozen over lakes. I do this constantly over the winter and was curious if any other forum members did it.

No, and why the hell do you race on frozen lakes anyways.....im not taking my chance of getting my car stuck or dying when the ice cracks.

the water never gets cold enough around here.

g3tmydrift, it's a popular thing to do because of the risk. most lakes up north freeze thick enough in the middle of winter that it's generally not too dangerous to drive cars across them

Actually.... I have an ice race coming up in two weeks!!! It's at the Lake George Winter Carnival in up-state NY. Although... I won't be racing the car... I'm racing my YFS200!!! Quad ice races kick A$$!!!!

And there is really NO danger in driving on frozen lakes up here. It takes 3" (yes that's inches) of ice to hold an average vehicle. The lakes generally freeze to over 3' (yes that's FEET) thick this time of year!!!

At most of these events there are thousands of bystanders and hundreds of vehicles on the ice. Along with a good number of tractors, busses, and a grandstand. If it wasn't safe.... they wouldn't be out there.

yeah I've known guys that raced their 240's on ice, a lot of them did it on frozen over fields. Even here in WV our lakes can get 5 or 6" over them during cold winters, my family used to go ice fishing on the resevoirs.

I remember hearing about truckers that drove over lake superior in winter. I think it was on discovery or something. They were talking about they would be driving and could hear the ice cracking! That is just nuts!

Here's an organized association. I had heard of single car "time trials", but the pics in their gallery show side-by-side racing

We took our big suburban out on the ice last year.. Got stuck in a 4ft snow drift <doh>.. Last year there was 2 feet on a small lake in northern indiana.

I wouldnt drive a car on the ice with anything less than 1 foot... I have a hard time believing 3 inches could handle a CAR!!

Yea, I would have a hard time WALKING on around 3 in, much less driving a car...

Unless he is talking about some sort of "super ice"

Ice racing is great. Wish i had time to do it more. No I don't use the 240 for it. I hav a Jetta I'm beating on for the winter. As most of you prolly can imagine... ice racing is less about the power of your car and more about driver finesse. Most people don't worry too much about a little paint trading on the ice, it's almost like a demolition derby kind of vibe. No one with a brain brings something they care A LOT about out to the races. ;)

Just your garden variety (or lake variety) ice. I'm not asking you to try it... just stating the facts as they have been presented to me. I've been on the ice hundreds of times every winter for races, ice fishing, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling.... all kinds of stuff. 3" is pretty damn strong. The only problem is.. with that little amount of ice.. .there are usually open water spots in the middle of the lake or river. So... some precaution is necessary.
