Find people who have had work done, and see how it looks. If you aren't a painter, 90% of the body shops out there will do a better job than you could do. They've got the experience and the proper equipment.
I'm not gonna remove my own spleen just because I don't trust doctors, nor am I gonna take a can of krylon to my beloved car.
As I've said, look at examples of their work. Ask if you can talk to some of their prior customers. There are excellent body shops out there, you just have to find them. Maybe you could ask around if you have any local car clubs.
