This may be a pipe dream of a future project, but I'm still curious about the possibilities. Has anyone done or heard of swapping newer VQ35DE's in 3rd gen maximas? What about the japanese bluebird with the sideways mounted SR20DET?

While I am pretty committed to my 240 project at the moment, I do think it would be cool to build up a very unique maxima some time in the future. Just wondering how much work would be involved.

I've looked into the VQ swap myself.

Not a lot of info--I've never heard of one that I can recall. The car is sort of ignored, which is partly why I like it so much.

I absolutely love how the VQ35 makes it's power. So much torque, so low on the tach. When my VG finally gives in, I'm finding a way to cram a VQ in there. By then I should be able to get a hold of a VQ40 fairly easily. 284 lb ft of torque and a VQ powerband is a dream come true.

Here's another thread with some VE performance options:zer...67896

I've given thought to swapping in the crank and rods from the Pathy's VG33 as well.

There are quite a few different routes for power with the third gen. They all just need more money than I have...

I agree about the coolness of the fact that the maxima is overlooked. I like the exclusivity but it would be nice to have a good aftermarket following like the 240 has (which is why I have one) And it would be nice to breath some new life into the popularity of them so that a few more would be preserved. I see them all the time hauling around trailer trash in relative filth. (not that everyone who lives in a trailer is trash) I think every one I see just about has some sort of body damage or looks to be on its last leg. It just kills me. Superchargers are so not economical for a car this old so a feasible engine swap would be a nice thing to see.

I wonder if there would be a market for custom motor mounts and spliced wiring harnesses for sidewinder SR20Det's and VQ's.... Also if there was a newer motor to start with, then those superchargers would not seem so impractical either. I'm just thinking aloud at this point.
