My wife and I are considering a Versa, but she plays string bass and needs a car that will carry it. While it appears the Versa has the storage capacity to do it, the way the area between the hatch and the rear seats is lower than the rear seats makes it unsuitable for hauling around the bass.

Does anybody have any ideas for a riser or platform designed to fit that space that would make for a nice, large level area to set the bass on?

There is an OEM product that levels it.

Is this what you are talking about?

Yep. It is rather expensive if you ask me.

How does she intend to carry the string bass? will it be slid through one of the 60/40 openings?

She would probably load it from the rear.

Ah ic. Well depending on the size of the instrument in its case - she may find that the lack of a flat platform may actually keep her instrument more secure. I've moved many longer items with the heavier/larger side down in the cargo area - and tilted slightly upwards towards the front. The cargo moves less that way.

You could also consider looking at comparable like a Honda Fit or Kia Forte 5. :)

Due to the size of the bass and that it is in a soft case, she would do better with a larger, flat surface.

Thanks for the mention of Fit, we were already planning at looking at one of those, plus we looked at the Matrix/Vibe.

Right now, the Matrix/Vibe is slightly ahead due to the large, flat area in the back and the front console.

However, we like the interior space on the Versa better.

If the Matrix/Vibe is under consideration - then I strongly suggest looking at the new Kia Forte 5. Much more refined engine/transmission than the um.. quickly aging Corolla hatch.
