Any hypermiler on this forum? Or anybody that applies some of the more practical hypermiling techniques?

Anybody with a scangauge II on their versa? I recently started applying some of the hypermiling techniques while driving my civic. I am interested in getting something more comfortable and am considering the versa cvt or 6spd hatch to replace the civic (too bumpy with 38 psi in the tires plus the lack of hand rest).

Numerous people here have Scanguages installed on their Versas.

We do have one hypermiler in particular who is pulling about 48 mpgs out of his Versa.

cansecokid said he got like 46 mpg and I'm averaging 48. I can't remember what transmission he had, but I have the CVT.

Thanks for your replies. 46-48 is very admirable from a 1.8L gas motor. I got 40 on my first attempt from my civic. Time to go test drive a versa, again. May be I will wait for the 09s to show up at the lot to get a 08 cheaply.

My last commuter was a 1989 nissan sentra and I got about 38.5 mpg in it until it jumped time. the versa is a really comfortable ride. I commute 144 miles a day so that was something that I was worried about too. I looked at the honda fit but it was too small. i bought my versa april 30 and got a good deal on mie. I'd wait and see how car sales are doing at the end of the month.

Couple of question about the CVT on the versa.

How does it react to coasting?

What's your rpm if you are driving at 65mph?

I wish the 6spd versa had a taller overdrive. I am hoping nissan would do something about that to increase versa's highway mileage.

How does it react to coasting? Unfortunately, engine braking slows you down, even on slight inclines. In the mountains, I sure coasted a lot when I had a manual transmission...

What's your rpm if you are driving at 65mph? On the flat, mine runs 2000 rpm at 60 mph and 2500 at 75, so that would be about 2170 at 65.

Yes, if the Versa manual ran at lower rpm's at highway speed I might have gotten one. But I've sure gotten used to the CVT in the last 20 months!

If you're doing 40 mph or less after you let off the gas to coast tap the lightly gas pedal and the rpms drop to like 1000... I'm assuming all the versas with the CVT do this but maybe mine just has some sort of defect. If anyone gives this a try let me know if it's just mine or if this works for other people

Thanks for your posts guys.

So versa CVT does not let you efficiently coast. It seems pulse and glide is more efficient in hwy driving than setting the cruise and applying constant throttle. With a CVT I won't be able to do that. Hwy mileage however is not my biggest concern. I am more interested in city driving mpg because thats what I do most.

On the other hand 2170 rpm for 65mph is great.

Will somebody chime in with a 6spd as to what rpm they see at 65mph? I did a test drive a while ago, may be its time for another go.

Our '07 Versa SL is my wife's car. I don't really use hypermiler driving techniques (and my wife sure as heck doesn't) but I was instantly impressed with how low the RPMs are at highway speeds with the CVT. It just cruises right along almost like it's idiling.

While we were waiting for our SL CVT to be delivered, the dealer loaned my wife and I a base S with 6spd. We have to take the interstate between the dealer and home, and the RPM's were around 3200 at 70mph in 6th, iirc.

With the CVT, 70mph yields about 2300 RPM's. A LOT quieter at those speeds, too.
