Any experience with the split cv boots?

In looking around at my suspension to find a creaking when going over bumps (I think it's the rear control arm bushing), I noticed my driver side cv boot is starting to crack. Certainly, I'd prefer a quick fix now over an expensive one later, so has anyone used the Dorman or Hippo Red split cv boots with success?

Dont waste your money with split cv boots. It will fall apart with in a mile once you start driving

It seems the cv axle isn't a lot more and I've got to have a shop do my control arm anyway. They might as well do both at the same time.

It seems my only two choices from Rockauto are an el cheapo brand AWPI and a Surtrack which says it doesn't include the ABS ring. Is that a part that can be reused that's already on the car or another part I've got to find?

1AAuto has a new one for $65...doesn't say what brand.

There is a pretty extensive thread/topic (link below) here about dealing with the cracked cv boots as it's a pretty common issue. I've had to replace both of mine on the front, but didn't have to replace the axle. Others have had to replace the axle. One of our Mods, IMStricken, has a great video in that link about how to deal with it. I got replacement boots from Napa. The other major auto parts stores in my area didn't carry them.

Yeah I've watched his videos. I had my passenger side axle done a few months ago. The inner boot on my driver side is starting to crack, so I figure I may as well just replace the whole thing if the split boots are crap. Otherwise the outer boot will likely start cracking in a few months anyway.

HONESTLY, JUST HAVE THE AXLE REPLACED OR THE BOOT REPLACED. THE SPLIT BUSINESS IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. THE GREASE CAN INTERFERE WITH THE GLUE SEALING, ETC. I'D STAY AWAY.

I have used both Autozone and Advance Auto Parts and it works just fine. Replacing it was not as bad as in the video if you live in rust-free areas like California.

I installed a split boot over 25 years ago and I remember it lasting at least 2 years. It had a lifetime guarantee and I replaced it once before eventually replacing the drive axle. Hopefully they've gotten better since then. Good luck!
