Please read this piece carefully guys, so you can fully understand what I've been through and where I want to go with my Elantra. The reason I keep it because it's easy to repair.
Okay guys, here's the deal! I have a 1995 Hyundai Elantra that I drive to and from work everyday. The car came from upstate New York and when i drove it back to Florida, it had a nasty vibration that broke the A/C line while the previous owner owned it. It is per-say my work car, but it's not tacky-looking at all and by no means a slow-poke. Under the hood of this car is a 1993 JDM Galant AMG 4G63 high compression engine. It used to have a whopping 225psi per cylinder until I overheated it one morning whilst speeding to work (Loose lower radiator hose). The problem is that this engine also have a lot of vibration and it has broken many parts to include: x3 A/C compressor brackets, x7 A/C lines, x7 p/s pump lines, cracked one transmission in half, and is now on it's 4th transmission in 1.8 years, killed about 5 alternators because when the P/S line cracks, it leaks the fluid into the alternator, let's not talk about how many broken manifold studs I've had to change,x3 flywheel changes,x3 clutch set changes, etc, etc.
And because I overheated it, the compression is now in the range of about 140psi per cylinder. It was boiling the water heavily, but i added some miracle stuff and it's been pretty chilled the last couple of months. It's down on power, but still hauls @$$ when I need it to. Vibrations were felt at about 1800rpm and then 3800rpm. I changed the water pump, reset the timing belt and checked the timing of the balance shaft belt and it was all spot on. Everyone quickly assumed it was the balance shafts, but it felt like the engine was in an awkward position and it fought the mounts the whole time. I had a similar swap in a 1993 Elantra and that thing went flawless; and was very fast as well for a N/A Elantra.
Lately, the car has been having serious chatter when I engaged the clutch as if the torque mounts were non-existent and it feels really mean and nasty. This A.M. my hood was partially open when I came out, so I got curious and start inspecting for issues. After about 5 minutes of searching, I found that the part of the block where the front torque mount bracket fastens to, has cracked and is now seperated and it sucks.
Now the good news, I'm debating should I put in the 4G61 turbo motor for $600 or should I seek a 4G63T? Do you guys think the torque mount brackets could've caused that much vibration to cause that much trouble. That's the only thing left from the original motor that came with the car. I even changed the cross member and multiple mounts. My point is that I have done this swap before using the same mounts and have not experience all these issues. Unfortunately, that car was sold on ebay to a guy in Texas and I even converted the drums to disc brakes.
Here's what I'll probably need, a 1G turbo ecu and some 450cc injectors if I get the 4G61T or in any case, a 1G turbo ecu preferably a 1993-1994 unit.
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all who chime in,
Dee
