So like the post title says, i was wondering if there was any way to upgrade the rear brakes without switching to an internal drum-type ebrake setup like that of the z32 swap.

You don't want to upgrade the rear brakes without either a) upgrading the fronts as well or b) correcting the front to rear brake bias.

Without correcting the rear brake bias the rear brakes will lock up first. This is not a good thing because the car will tend to pull to one side. This is not a good thing especially in anything more aggressive than a casual predictable stop. Panic braking or aggressive stopping will put your a** into a curb or next lane of traffic tail first.

That being said, look into the later model Maxima's for some form of interchangeability.

^^true, I do plan on upgrading the front as well.

So, I took a trip to the junkyard today to look for some options, looks like I may have found some options.

-The early model (base) 300zx has huge rear disks 11.5 inches to be exact, they also don't use a drum-type ebrake, another cool thing is they they are also 4 lug, so you don't have to change the hubs or redrill the rotor to fit. only downfall is that they don't use vented rotors.

-The Q45 (base) also has 11.5 inch rear rotors, and a non internal drum ebrake, but unlike the 300zx it uses hp vented rotors, and it's 4 lug

-The 4 lug (base) j30 and early 90's altima also use similar setups to the early model 300zx (base) with a non drum ebrake and non-vented rotors

so what's the conclusion? Nissan seems to have carried a trend on their late 80's to mid 90's cars. I have noticed that on most of their 4 lug cars, Nissan uses an non-internal drum type, and on 5 lug cars, Nissan uses an internal drum type.
