if your mechanically inclined and you can have the car off the road for a long time I think you can do it. I'd sugest that you study the SR motor and use the search button to find out as much as you can.

the swap is very easy for someone with mechanical experience. not necessarily knowledge, but experience. you could always read about how to do the swap but if you keep turning the bolt the wrong direction, grab the wrong size tools, lose parts, etc. , it will be a nightmare.

if you have a friend that knows their way around a car and tools to help you ou, it will be much better help than the internet or manual.

You ask for peoples opinions but then you argue with them as your mind is already made up.

Do you have an engine lift? What if you rent a engine lift... something goes wrong and you cant drop the engine in that day? Do you have the wiring harness... do you even have the engine? a bov? other misc. parts... How about the tools? and no... a 36 piece wrench set wont do it. How about all the extra hoses? How about finding all the missing bolts you will need. What about a garage to keep your car for the 6 months you'll be guessing where things go and how they work....

Never assume that everything will be easy sailing.. bolts brake... brackets brake... belts get torn... parts brake.. shnit happens... and when shnit happens to a Jspec only engine.. you need parts from Japan... no support from US factory.

No need to reply to the questions asked above... just something for you to think about before plunging into a complicated project.

Not trying to discourage you here, if you feel confident enough to do this, then do it. Just remember you need lots of reasearch and general car knowledge, specifically turbo car knowledge.

Now I know you are not ready to hear this... but, IMO you are not ready for this swap. Based on what you have written in this thread I dont believe you can handle the swap. Hell, if someone asks me if they are ready or not, would lead me to believe that he/she is not ready. Remember you asked us what you should do.. it is not like we are telling you what to do.. you asked for it and we are replying with our opinions, try not to take it personally.

Again, I am not saying it is impossible for you to do this.. but, in the long run it might be easier on you and your wallet to have a pro do it. Maybe start off with some easier projects, such as a brake swap or a suspension job... just to get used to working on your car and building your confidence towards the engine swap.

When you are ready you'll know it and you wont have to go on a forum to ask strangers what they think =)

Good luck and I wish you the best!

thx for the more thoughtful response Nils... maybe it'll happen this year. Or maybe next.

I think that it could go either way judging by the responses I got. And just by what I think. I'll have to work out the rest

Thx for the replies tho. I'll post again to give an update of when I start the project or when I get it done. (most probably when I find something tricky...)

p.s. I am considering getting professional help with the install... but that's probably not for the whole thing. Just for questions or maybe a certain part. I searched about florida shops and such. Found a good thread.

I think if he does his research and takes his time and thinks through things logically he will be able to do the swap maybe not right at moment but in a month or two he could have the means necessary to complete the swap. I got my 240 a little over a year ago and had little or no understanding but know I have made custom parts for my car and have a good working knowledge of a motor.

You can definitley do an engine swap on your own. Just get some shop manuals and read up and get some help from any of your friends or family that know anything about cars. I helped my dad (a little) build a car from the frame up in our garage. He's not a professional mechanic. He learned from messing around helping his neighbors and friends build muscle cars in California. I'll admit, the car had a few choke-ups in the beginning but it runs great now. Now he's gunna help me swap an sr20det into my 90 240sx. It'll be a peice of cake. Good luck!

The people who suggested for you to do it yourself, have no where near the experience or knowledge of the people suggesting you have someone with experince/professional do it for you.

Remember that tuning will be a big part of having a car that runs to its capabilities.
