Worst accidents. I can think of two memorable ones.
Off track: With one passneger, one evening on the way to dinner, I'm at a red light. Light turns green, I'm the third car to cross the intersection in my former show condition corvair going about 15 mph. Didn't know there was an apparent impromptu street race coming at me from the right. Stupid kid in his fathers Cordoba (the one with Corinthian Leather) He realized too late he had a red light and couldn't stop. T-bones me at about 50 mph at the passenger door. I saw his lights about 25' before impact. My car was airborne for about 50' then skidded another 100' before slamming against a tall curb and rebounding. Took firemen/paramedics 30minutes to extract my friend. She shattered just about bone on her right side, ( elbow, shoulder, jaw, knee, pelvis, knee, ankle, etc). I escaped with 75 stitches (my blood was everywhere) and a concussion. She recovered but she spent a few days in intensive care and a month in traction. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of street racing.
On track: In a Skip Barber formula dodge at Lime Rock, drying track after a rain storm. Going full throttle flying at the down hill turn. Hit a puddle with the my right side tires at the apex, went sideways for about a 100 yards, engulfed in white tire smoke most of the way. Felt like slow motion. Then spun into the freshly mowed infield, got covered in grass clipping. I got it stopped before hitting the tire pile. Since the downhill turn is visible to the pits, everyone saw it. When I returned to the pits covered in grass, the comments were numerous, including "hey, ya' got a mulching attachment for that thing", and "hey John Deere, my lawn needs mowing too". I got hosed off and went out again.
