In the process of painting my valve covers I peeled off the rubber pads that are stuck to the side of the valley of the valve covers, around the coil packs. I presume they were there to prevent arcing from the coil to the valve cover. They were about 3"x2", and there were 2-per-coil.

Does anyone have any evidence about whether or not it's necessary to replace these? Anyone who's done it, what did you use? I checked with Infiniti and it's not a replacement part (duh).

I wouldn't sweat it, the only arcing "should" occur within the rubber boot so if your boots are good it shouldn't be an issue.

I also added grease to my boots in the groove where they meet the valve covers and some dielectric inside the boots. When I got my engine a couple plug cavaties were filled with water and even after rebuilding it, it sat outside through a rainstorm and I pulled them when I primed my oil pump and had one with water in it, so I added the grease.
