Has anyone had any luck in replacing that hideous looking 9" black antenna with a much shorter one????? Is it safe to say that this portion (the rubber mast) is just for the AM-FM side of the radio???

I think the mast is tall because it is mounted to your trunk instead of your roof and it wishes it was closer to the sky. You can probably buy the antennae for the roof model and install it on your trunk lid (with slightly reduced quality in FM and AM reception). The base seems similar, so the mounting is probably compatible. The cost would be, well it's a new model car, so you'd get a new one from the dealership in your choice of color I think.

It would look nice I guess, the tail doesn't look bad to me anyway. You could always go antennae delete and fill the holes and have it spot painted to match.
