It finally happened. The power antenna on my 93 Q45 (80K miles) stopped working.

The motor runs trying to lift and lower the antenna but there's only a grinding sound. I would suspect the gearing is worn or broken.

My friendly neighbourhood Infiniti dealer in Toronto tells me there's no repair possible, only replacement. The gears are an integral part of the motor

In Canadian dollars I'm quoted......

Antenna.....................$150Motor.........................$470Labour (1.5 hours)....$130

Total..........................$750C or a little less than $500 US dollars.

Good grief!

I've got the word out to local wreckers to alert me if a Q comes in. What model years are compatible?

Do I have any other options....other than disconnecting the motor and enjoying a manual antenna?

Thanks

Take the assembly apart and remove the broken pieces of the antenna nylon cord, reassemble, buy new mast and install.

Call Joe at Infiniti of Scottsdale for the new mast. (480)941-0055, parts department - tell them you're a NICO member.

I reside in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I had an exactly same problem and our friendly Infinity Dealer quoted about the same amount to do the repairs and for parts.

I went to the local wreck yard and found mast from some other Nissan that had automatic antenna. I paid five dollars for the mast and spent about an hour to take antenna apart and put it together. Works perfect now.

Does Infiniti make those small diversity rubber antennaes like they use on European cars. I would like that alot better than the long metal telephone pole we have now. And my motor is acting up too.

Fred,

You are so right; I received your reply just after I got back from the transmission shop. I left it there to have the system flushed. They are replacing the filter along with new fluid. *** No Guaranty *** to fix the problem! I just left the Infiniti dealer and they told me that it was the torque converter for sure - 100%. They won't replace it without replacing the transmission and the radiator at the same time. They suggested I take it to an independent transmission shop and do as I did. First flush the system and if that doesn’t help or solve the problem, then have them jerk the TQ out and rebuild it!

~~~ NEWS AT 11:00 ~~~ I will let you all know the results!
Thanks, Gary
Ooops Looks like we jumped into a other thread...:pface
Actually for now i wouldn't worry about putting in a new TC (which amounts to a partial transmission rebuild$$).
Try the flush thing and stay in "3" in town and who knows maybe in 2 years , I will ask youhow your transmission is doing and you'll say something like:" still does that funny thing in slow accel in "D" but otherwise fine".
I just had the same problem. Got a new mast for $40 from my local dealer, so probably cheaper from Scottsdale. Then you've got to go into the trunk, remove the liner on the right side, and remove the antennal motor. Open the motor and remove the broken plastic line with the teeth that will be wrapped around the gear. Close and replace. Then feed in the new line from the new mast from outside the car - i.e. into the hole in the body into the motor. Have someone turn the radio on and off as you feed it in so that the motor takes up the line. Replace the nut and trim that holds on the mast. It may also need some lubrication, and you might have to run it up and down quite a few times to get it adjusted so that the mast goes all the way down.
Thanks everyone for the help.
Got the motor out Saturday and removed the few broken bits of nylon cord.
Ran over to the dealer to pick up the mast head.
$155 dollars Canadian...thats like a hundred dollars US. Thats nuts when I'm hearing 40 0r 50 dollars US (or less) from the board members.
The helpful, smiling parts representative informed me no other Nissan mast head would fit. Somehow I'm just a little suspicious.
Are any forum members aware of another model of antenna that would fit? I checked all the wreckers today and no one has a Q45.
By the way, radio reception is just fine without any antenna, even in underground parking!
Thanks AZhitman but they fit 1997 to 2000 Q45s only. I have a 1993 and they won't ship out of the US.
