Since one of my brothers was up visiting we decided to go out to lunch. Upon walking up to my Versa after lunch, I noticed someone was nice enough to hit my car and leave. Bumper has some tabs broken off and it's scuffed up. They also pushed the passenger side headlight into the passenger fender and bent that. I bring it in tomorrow for an estimate and repair. Glad I get to pay a $500 deductible for someone else's mistake.

No, you pay a deductible any time you file a claim UNLESS:

1) The other party is at fault, and you are filing through their insurance OR2) You are filing for a rock chip replacement or towing reimbursement.

It may not be a $500 deductible, though. Most people have that for their Comprehensive deductible, but sometimes incidents like these are covered under Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage, which is usually a $300 deductible.

And the October Curse rolls on...

Whoa!! You might want to call your insurance company and find out how much your premiums go up with a lower deductible. I used to have my deductible at $250, but read that unless you plan on getting into a lot of accidents $500 is a good rate to be at. I figure I'm a safe driver so a $500 deductible makes a lot of sense. Of course, I didn't take ignorant, irresponsible bleepity-bleeps into the equation.

The V goes in for the estimate tomorrow. Let's see how much a minor fender bender hit-and-run costs.

you should definitely change your comprehensive deductible. depending on your insurer and your risk level it might only be a few dollars difference to go from 1k to $250. Also, some insurance companies have separate clauses that define different deductibles for some special 'events'. For example, my comprehensive deductible is $250, but i only pay a $100 deductible for glass repairs.

I would suggest asking your agent several "If ____ happens to my car what happens?" questions. You might be surprised what you learn.

Got my estimate this morning. $1800. They can reuse the bumper and headlight but they need to replace the passenger front fender and do some painting. My comprehensive is $250 (I believe) and my collision is $500.

On a side now, my rental car is a 2007 Chevy Silverado 4x4 with extended cab. I'll miss the gas mileage but I'm enjoying the V8, hehe.

Let me know if this works.
holy cow... he did THAT in a parking lot? What was he doing, the Grand Prix of Shopping Cart Land? That's not even subtle.

probably why they left. Where you were, did they have surveillance cameras on the parking lot?

Yep, in the parking lot. No surveillance cameras, but how I wish they did. See, it took place at a brew pub, so I'm guessing the person was drunk, or had enough to drink that they didn't want to get the cops involved. I mean, even if the person who hit my car had 2 beers and was under the limit, they probably would have still been nailed for driving under the influence. So, knowing that they probably got the heck out of there, leaving me with a $500 bill.
