I see it as exactly the opposite:
Toyota's days of cruising past on a reputation attained over a decade ago are coming to an end. People are finally acknowledging that Toyota makes mistakes, too. And more than that, the downside to Toyota's volume-volume-volume business strategy of the last 10 years is beginning to come to the forefront.
Toyota of 1998 would not have had these problems. Toyota of 2011 does. This is not a bandwagon issue, it's a quality control issue.
