Last time I had my timing chain replaced (some time ago..) on my nissan 240SX 1989. I noticed that the chain rattling was gone, but the car was slower and low in performance, lack of power. Well I checked the ignition position and check the timing on the car and is all good according to the Nissan manual. But by changing the timing on the car, it will feel back like it used to be in regards to power and speed....I think my mechanic failed to align the cams properly and just went with the alignment of the ignition at the end. I need to replaced the valve cover gasket (it leaks) this weekend, is there anything I can check while in there to ensure everything is align like is suppose to???

thanks

yea when you have the cover off hand crank your engine so the TDC mark on your crank pulley is on the mark. then look at your cam shafts and make sure they are on their appropriate marks. If they arent even close to the marks bring the engine around one rotation till you get to TDC again and then check to make sure the marks are right.

ign timing is good? if not it may be the oil pump shaft out of time.

arent our motors interference motors? If the cam timing is off, wont the piston hit the valve?

Most interference motors have a narrow window of accepability [1-2 teeth [some even 3 teeth] at cam, 1 at crank] before valve to pistion contact occurs.

At high rpm the rods [bolts] stretch and piston rises [plus expands with heat] so what seems ok manually may not be sufficient at high rpms.
