Ok. Here's my idea. Since I have a half-messed up tire and a one curbed rim, I'm thinking about getting a new wheel and tire and using the defective ones as a fullsize spare. I'm thinking about cutting a hole in the carpet and board that cover the spare tire well, and letting the excess from the 18" Enkei RS-6 and 225/40/18 Yokohama Parada Spec-2 stick through the carpet.

Here's where my speaker idea comes into play. There is a LOT of room on the inside of that rim. I'm thinking of laying some fiberglass on the inside of it (so the rim can be pulled away from it easily ) and mounting one 8-10" subwoofer on the inside. I'm thinking of facing it downwards, so there is something for the sound to bounce off of. Plus....it would look cool as hell opening the trunk and seeing the top half of my rim/tire looking at you.

Anyone done this?

sounds like a good idea...when i put my full size spare in..i just raised the floor a couple inches...leaving enough room for a ten inch sub on either side of the spare tire if i wanted to.but i like your idea..make sure you have enough airspace for the sub or get a free air sub for what you're doing-

Well. I've done my calculations, and based on the rim size and offset, I should have roughly .63 cu ft of airspace. That's not factoring in the rise in the bottom of the spare tire well. So, I'm assuming I should have nominal airspace for one JL 8w3 which like .33 cu ft. All I need to do now, is buy another rim and tire, an amp, the sub, and all the fiberglass supplies.

:)

Good idea, but wouldn't you rather have the sub facing up for more air? Also, 8" subs aren't very loud.... you might wanna go 10" IF you can fit one in there. It'll be harder, but you'll be much happier with the sound.

On the subject, I'm completely redoing the system in my car... what kind of speakers/subs should I get?

I dont think a 10" sub would fit. My rim is only a 18x7. Counting the offset (+35mm) that leave me with roughly 4.87" in total depth to mount the speaker. Most 10" subs need 5-6 inches mounting depth. I found that a JL 8w3 only needs 4.25" to be mounted. Also, the JL W3 series kick a$$. I'm not really wanting BOOM BOOM bass, just something to fill in the missed frequencies.

I got a Kicker component system in the front and Kicker midranges in the back powered by a Kenwood amp and a Kenwood headunit. Im thinking about putting 2 Kicker S8L7 in the trunk right behind the rear seats which is gonna be power by another Kenwood amp (which I got for free...Yeah). Jerome, wouldn't the sub rattles a lot if it was in the wheel?

As long as the rim and the box are securely fastened down, there is nothing to rattle. The only point of contact would be the fiberglass on the rim, and the tire on the well. Nothing really there to rattle.

Sorry, about my vagueness.

What is spl/sq? I have quite a few bucks, but I dont really want to spend more than $500... all I need are 1 or 2 subs.

SPL = Sound Pressure Level. this is basically the amount of pressure that your subwoofers output. It's usually only for people who want to compete with very loud systems. You wouldn't want this in a daily driver system really.SQ = Sound Quality. This is what you're gonna want. This is a messure of how good it sounds, i.e. the least amount of distortion in the signal, staging of the sounds system, lantancy time between your high/mid/sub ranges, ect.

As for the type of speakers you want, there's no real way to tell you, as everyone has different listening preferences. Personally I love Cerwin-Vega, Kicker, and Eclipse, but that's just me. If I were you I'd go around to every car audio shop I could and listen to every type of speaker I could till I found the one that produced that magical sound that makes your spine tingle.

Hope I helped out some : )
