I have the Beltronics STi- Driver, bout to upgrade to the STi-R. I love it and would recommend it to anyone.

But i think the best one out there is the Valentine 1......the only reason i have the STi is cause its undetectable

i'm a big advocate of the escort series. the 8500 is a really good radar which detects X, K, KA and lazer. the 9500i is even better though as it has GPS to block out false alarms which is why i got rid of my 8500, it just gave me a headache from all the false alarms driving by gas stations and grocery stores. a lot of people say that the escort, beltronics and V1 are around the same with their own pro's and con's, you can search some youtube vids which show people who have all 3 mounted at once driving around

As far as I know, they're only illegal in Va, and DC.

Certain things like Radar jammers are illegal in other states, but you should be fine in NY

I've been looking into them myself lately. From what I'm finding the ones that retail under the $150 mark arent worth your time/money. That said, I agree with Blackmobile in that "...a lot of people say that the escort, beltronics and V1 are around the same with their own pro's and con's...". There are many forums dedicated to radar detectors alone and they've got good personal experience stories and many revies as well- lots of good info if you're into researching before you buy.I'm personally leaning towards Escort- either the 8500 x50 or the 9500i (the 9500ix sounds awesome but its way more than i want to spend-even from craigslist or ebay). The main complaint is that the 8500x50 has false alarms- but theres a mute button so it shouldnt be that big a deal- no? I'm wondering exactly how annoying those false alarms would be...

the escort 8500 has false alarms, but so does the beltronics and v1 as far as I know, the only reason the 9500i doesn't is because it has built in GPS which will filter out false alarms. the false alarms can be muted, there's actually 2 mute buttons for th 8500, one on the radar unit and one on the plug, i had mine plugged into my cubby hole so it was easier to reach than on my windsheild. i just got annoying for me, you have the spots where it would always go off, around malls, grocery stores and so on. next radar i get will definately be the 9500i but right now funds are low.

what i've found out is tht sum of the gps enabled require a subscription, and thts still sumthin i dnt wanna bother w/ -

as far as my choices have gone, im stickin w/ cobra, since they are a local thing for me, and ive narrowed my choices to the xrs 9645 or the xrs 9345.

1 has the radar band from 15 to 14, both are undetectable by spectre 1, and immunity to v-g2 and both have how (what i like) they tell u wen ur actually IN the radar, along w/ 360 degrees.

only difference is-as far as the LED panel or the signal lights- i dnt think i really have a preference lol so for the sake of w/e i might go w/ the 9345. the 9645 has a electronic compass too- OOHHH lol (i kno right?)- i hve a gps for tht tyvm.

also-Radar signals include:- X Band, K Band, Ka Superwide, Ku Band, VG-2, Spectre I and Spectre IV+. Laser signals include LTI 20-20, Ultra Lyte, ProLaser, ProLaser III, Stalker LIDAR and Speedlaser

and a pop mode- for (i guess when the cops use a burst gun?) which is what the po-po's use around here a lot- i think im on the right idea now

im assuming thats like- EVERYTHING lol- if its missing one- how crucial is it?

oh- and in canada- radar detectors are ILLEGAL the cop WILL take it or make u destroy it (run it over w/ ur car) when i was at border patrol for 2 hours having my car searched after picking up my lights from brandon- a dude was 'reprimanded' for it lol and he was complaining. funny for me- no so much for the guy lol

either a top-end Bel/Escort or a newer V1. The majority of the rest are crap, IMO.

I have an older Bel 985 in one car and a 8500 in the other.

that depends on the province, here in BC it's totally legal, Alberta too, i don't know about any further east.
