Flush the radiator/engine, check for air bubbles in the radiator when idleing, check thermostat.
I've had multiple problems with cars in the past overheating (mostly because they are old, and the previous owner abused the hell out of them.)
If the upper hose is hot and the lower is cold, then that means you are not getting good circulation throughout the coolant system, and would easily point to engine overheating after it gets to normal operating temperature.
If you do have air bubbles in your radiator at idle, then your headgasket might be at fault, but i would try the other routes first, because they are cheaper, easier, and very well could be the cause of your problems.
Keep us updated.
