Just drove my brother's new BMW M3 with the 6-speed variable transmission. Very fast! Anyway - its oil spec is for Castrol synthetic 10W-60. Have you heard anything about this product. What do you think of this viscosity range? thanks

Its the right viscosity for this engine.

Like so many performance engines the M3 engines showed some real problems on 30 weight oils.

While the root cause was a weakness in some internal parts, a temporary fix by the factory was to spec the stronger oil. After the fix they left this oil as a spec and also it now applies to the entire M line to include M5.

The USA is teh only country in which oils like 5w-30 are normal factory recommendations.

There are some engines sold in USA that spec 5w-30 as the onoly oil, but that are in other countries speced as 10w-40 for winter and 20w-50 for summer.

Would any of the Mobil 1 oils meet their requirements? If its good for an M3 wouldn't it also be good for a old Q?

The MOBIL1 15w-50 gets close.I dont think the VH45DE oil sees quite the temps that this engine does.

If you drive a Vh45DE hard, the 15w-50 Mobil1 should be sufficeint in allsituations I can think of.

Also this Castrol R 10w-60 is a <very> expensive oil.

I wouldnt run it, unless maybe I was autoXing in very high ambient temps and even then, the M1 15w-50 or a Redline 20w-50 should be plenty.

The non synthetic/semi synthetic Valvoline racing oils are also not to be ignored for this application.

Really good summer oils for Q45:

non Syn: Chevron Supreme 10w-40 ( or thicker in desert summer) other good choices are more expensive but not neccessarily better such as GTX + Pennzoil

SemiSyn: Valvoline Durablend 10w-40 ( in desert summer next grade is good too)

Syn: Many great oils exist here, M1 0w-40, redline 10w-40, M1 "SUV formula" 5w-40, AMSOIL 40 weights. ( again in desert summer s next thicker grade a good idea.

Footnote: Dont be afraid of 50 weight oils in southern summers, in Australia which summer temps are about equal to southern USA or desert USA, 20w-50 and 25w-70 are the most popular grades.
