Well well well, looks like I've found myself a new home:ylsuper

I use to be a Honda Prelude guy but I've now evolved over to the all mighty 240's!!!!:D

My car is being fixed up as of now so I don't have it just yet (it's an 89' Coupe 5 spd) so now I 'll have to settle for moms Stanza:oface . But look everyone now that I'm apart of this great forum I figured I could use you all to teach me a few things about cars and such..

I've only been drivining for about a year and I've never been near a drivable stick shift (my car needs a battery) so I dunno how to drive one ....AT ALL:(:dunce ...And I have no close help so I have to start somewhere ya know...Could you guys help me with the basics and general driving stuff? It'd be greatly appreciated :)

Oh Yeah...do you all know where I could have any luck in finding Nissan 240's (S13) in plastic model cars? I figured since I'd be owning one soon I might as well add to my model car collection.

Thanks Everyone!!!!

welcome to NICO, hope we're very informative as far as driving, itll come to you in time, but dont start out thinking you're jeff gordon right off the bat

simple (VERY BASIC) breakdown 1. hold clutch in with key in ignition2. turn key until car starts(do not take foot off clutch)3. put the shifter in 1st gear (with the clutch still in!!)4. slowly give the car gas (rev to about 2,ooo rpm or so)5. slowly let off the clutch as you give it gas6. you're moving7. to change gears, let off gas, push clutch totally in, and move shifter to 2nd gear (straight back towards you) and again, let off of the clutch as you get back on the gas8. do the same as number 7 for all gear changes9. and you should know the whole brake thing, and if u dont, good luck!!

there guys, how do u like that, i should teach drivers ed!!

o yea, make sure hte parking brake is off when you want to move the car!! and make sure its on when you park itPARKING:1. push clutch all the way in2. move shifter to nuetral (center where it jiggles :))3. ease onto the brake until you are stopped4. keep on the clutch until you pull the parking brake and turn the car off, you're done!!

Push clutch in, rev it to 5 grand and dump the clutch.... thatll get you rollin....

well, for a first try, rev engine to 1500 or so, and slowly let the clutch out.... when engine revs to 3500-4500 ease off on gas, push clutch in, shift, and slowly let clutch back out... then apply more gas...

when you get it down right, it will be a fluid motion. you wont have to look at the rpms and you will shift at different points depending on how fast you want to get going....

Have fun....

welcome to our little twisted part of the net. NICO welcomes all. :batman as far as driving clutch in shift clutch out. if you want gas milage shift around 3000 rpm. do not let the clutch pedal halfway out while waiting at a red light.

Practice when no traffic is around. That's all you can do.

My old Subaru had a neat thing called a "hill holder" so when you disengaged the clutch on a slope, the brakes automatically held the car in position on the hill, so you didn't have to worry about rolling backwards into the guy behind you.

You DID have to worry about the system malfunctioning and applying the brakes even with the clutch engaged, though, which is probably the reason that mechanism no longer exists.

ok since were on the subject i got a question..

nlzmo400r, when you were doing your little driving tutorial, you said to stop , put the car in neutral and just use the brake to slow down, so is it good to use down shifting to stop instead of realy using the brake, you know what im talkin about? b/c my friend has a saturn that is a 5-speed, and when he goes to slow down he just down shifts and it like jerks the car slower, he hardly even uses the brakes, it doesnt seem like it would be good for the car/transmission to do that but i wasnt sure?

NO, no, no...using the driveline to slow/stop the car instead of the brakes is NOT a good idea (all the time). Here's why.

If you only use downshifting to slow down the car, the clutch and driveline is absorbing all the stress of stopping the car, instead of the pads and rotors. Now which would you rather replace...a set of pads for $100 or a new clutch for upwards of $500? (and a lot of time wasted)

Use the brakes, that's what they are there for. And slap your friend around before he toasts the Saturn's clutch.

I downshift to slow down my car, but I use the brakes and down shift at the same time. except 1st gear, I feel the gear ratio is too high to do it anyway, so no need.

*recieves slap anyway*

atl_240sx, when you get good at driving stick, and get bored like me, you can try to get moving with out giving the car gas. I got up to like 15mph in 3rd gear without using the gas pedal

THEn you can learn how to drive it w/o using the clutch. It CAN be done, my 95 Civic Si was a blast to drive that way... You just have to match the revs to where the shifter synchronizes...

Good advice on the downshifting, Meantime. Put it in neutral as you're slowing... Brake pads are cheap, clutches are not.

IMO brakes AND downshifting are the way to go. You don't want to coast too much, since you may need to quickly accelerate in case of an emergency. If you're coasting to a stop and need to accelerate in an emergency situation, it may be tough to get your car in the proper gear in time.

But anyway, as others said, don't downshift just to slow down without braking.

Downshifting in to first is poor form. AFAIK, it won't do any damage on its own, but there's more risk of overrevving your engine.

Here's a little article and some links on the right side of the screen...don't know if they're any good, but it might be worth a look.

clutch only costs about 3oo, and thats for an ACT performance clutch, but still, good answer, thats what i was going to say

AZHitman would you care to explain that? I dont get what u mean by shifting without using the clutch...

Oh and by the way I did get to go to 5th gear without using any gas hehe and I did start the car from dead stop and start from 5th gear hehe on a tiny little hill... hahah the car sounded like it was about to die on me.

I always brake and downshift.

Hitman is describing "slick shifting" I can do it in every gear in the stanza up, and from 4-3 and 3-2.

hard to explain.. a certain speed = a certain RPM in a certain gear. If you know your car, you can just rev and gently pull the shifter out of one gear, rev the car to the right rpm, and go into the next gear.
