the more I read about the CA18DET the more I want to get this motor. it seems like an awesome upgrade for the price I've seen on them. I do have a couple of questions, I did some searching but didn't see everything answered.

1. when installing the motor, do you just switch the ECU and wiring harness or do you use some of the KA harness? I know you need to switch the wires for the dash, but what about everything else?

2. would a front mount intercooler designed to fit an SR20DET work with a CA18DET, I mean would the pipes line up or not.

3. If I wanted my speedo to work right, I would need the KA speed sensor, but would that effect the ECU reading it at all?

4. How good are the CA18DET trannies, do they hold 300-350HP well?

5. In general how easy/hard was the swap?

I have pretty good wrenching skills, and if it's just a yank and put back in with a different ECU and Harness job, I think I could tackle it myself. Either that or the local spped shop has done several SR swaps, so I think they could handle this, but I'd like to save some money if I could.

1. I used the entire CA harness. If you use the KA lower harness, the only issue is that you will need a connector for the knock sensor, which is on the upper harness for the KA. Do a search on this.

2. A FMIC kit for a S13 (ie Blacktop or Redtop) will need the coldpipe modified quite a bit to work. A S14 or GReddy S13 kit (for the GReddy intake mani) will bolt up with very little modifications.

3. IF you have a KA24E now, you will need a CA18DE/T or a KA24DE speed sensor. I am running CA sensor and KA24DE cluster and all works well.

4. Should. The KA24E uses the same transmission, as does the SR20DET. The KA24DE has a longer 5th gear, but all are equally robust. Should be fine as long as the transmission is in good shape.

5. Well, this was my 1st swap, but the guy who helped me has done several Honda B series and 4 SRs, and he said that this was the easiest swap he had seen done. The hardest part was the harness modifications, but for the most part other than the Knock sensor, the herness modifications are identical to the SRs.

So the KA and SR transmissions are externally identical? Bellhousing and everything?

No, all the bellhousings are different, but the trannies themselves are the same. BTW, I am pretty sure it's the SR that has the longer 5th gear. I know there is a site that has all the SR/CA transmission and gear ratios listed.

From what I remember the ka and sr have the exact same ratios but the ca has the shorter 5th gear...
