Well, I've read how to replace them, I've read how to try to fix a stuck lifter..... so here is what I've done. I bought the car about 4 months ago with a water pump leak. I have another car so I didn't drive much at all. About a week ago, I put in a new water pump, hoses, therm, and the radiator was already replaced before hand. After I got the car back, it began to make a lifter noise. I have done an oil change and tried some of the Marvel Mystery Oil. I've only ran it for about 10 miles since then and was wondering..... Should I do a few more miles, oil change again and see what the results are? Or should I see about getting the lifters replaced. I can't do it myself, so I would have to find a mechanic that works with Jap cars since everyone seems to be GM certified around me. What is your advice!?!?!?!?!

Thats funny because I brought my car in to a mechanic I know to see if he could find my over heating problem and it turned out to be just a bad heater core hose that had a tiny little splice in it, but yea as soon as he fixed that and I went to pick up my car it started to make a lifter tick also. I did a compression test on mine and the number 4 cylinder came out about 20psi lower then the rest which all came out to about 150psi but it is a low compression motor. I just took the lifters from my 91 and replaced the lifters on the number 4 cylinder and I'll actually be starting it back up today so I'll let u know it goes. I guess just do a compression test and see how it comes out which might tell u if u have a stuck lifter

Ok, now this sounds really stupid, but i've had problems with the my current ka24de and my last ka24e ticking from the #4 cylinder. Changed the oil even more often and added lucas oil, which would quiet the noise for a day or so...but it always came back.

Ok the stupid part: I got new plugs and in before i replace them, i rested my hand on the plug cap for the #4, and it was "thumping" with each fire. I replaced the plug (which WAS loose), snugged it down, and when i started it up, no more tick!!!

In my old single cam, I had actually blown the #4 plug completely out of the valve cover, and had to have it re-tapped!

The aluminum in the valve cover is really soft, especially when it is hot, so I'm thinking that if the plugs get over tightened, they may actually tweak the threads and cause the plug to walk itself loose.

Could poor plug seal account for low compression as well?

It sounds stupid, but if you haven't already snugged the plugs, (not too tight) try it. I'm glad I did that before replacing the lifters!!

Let me know what you find out!
