I just got a 96 SE w/ 125k miles, and the struts/springs have never been replaced. The right rear strut is almost fully locked up. So, time to replace them =) The car is a daily driver and wont see any track days, I have a Formula Vee for that, and I go out driving driving probibly 2 or 3 days a month so ride quality and every day good handling are more important than razor turn in. I like my cars to stay reasonably flat in turns, to be neutral lending to slight understeer, and be able to take Downtown D.C. roads without a flinch. I think the KYB AGX's would be good, but what springs and shocks do everyone recommend?

I think that the majority of people on here would recommend the agx or the koni yellows. If the car will never see the track, then coilovers would probably be a waste of your money unless you are obsessed with adjustable ride height. I recently bought the agxs after quite a bit of research. I wanted adjustable damping as everyone who has it says they will never go back. Overall, you cant go wrong with the agx.

'Reasonably flat in turns' and 'downtown DC roads without a flinch' should not be used in the same sentence :D I had to drive my 240 to work a few times last year (way up on Conn. Ave) while my other car was in the shop, and it just happened to be shortly after I had installed the Ground Control racing setup - 450/325 ERS springs, Koni sports, GC camber plates, Whiteline poly bushings... talk about fun :rolleyes

I would suggest the AGX's, as the Koni's are not adjustable for rebound and are a little on the stiff side. At least with the AGX's you have the option of changing the ride stiffness. The down side is, when they wear out you throw them away, while the Koni's can be rebuilt/revalved. If the car is a daily driver though, I wouldn't expect that to happen for quite a while.

As an aside, there's this curve coming off the Memorial Bridge into VA - it's the second left after you come off the bridge... if you can catch it with no traffic around...

Have funEarl

The Koni Sport (yellow) are definitely rebound (but not compression) adjustable for the 240SX. The fronts are externally adjustable but the rears must be removed to be adjusted. The Sports don't "click" when you adjust them, so some people find them harder to use.

The fronts are actually inserts and require you to modify the OE strut. It doesn't look like brain surgery, but it's not exactly bolt in either.

I've never rode in a car with the Konis, so I can't comment on the damping. They are certainly a highly regarded product, but a lot of people also love their AGX's.

My bad - I meant to say the Koni's are not adjustable for compression (it sucks to get old). And the front strut install isn't bad at all if you're mechanically inclined.

Just a bit of drilling and cutting. You're right, it's certainly nothing complicated. Koni has some nice instructions here:

What springs are you going with?

I personally have Eibach Pro-Kits on currently stock (and in good shape) struts, and will be buying the KYB AGXs whenever I get the motivation to take my suspension apart again.
