Ok, so I know this is on ongoing issue, but I am not sure of what of part I need to replace. I have a 1996 J30 with a door lock issue. If I close my door and use the remote and lock the door either A) the door lock will go 90% down but not really lock or B)make a jittery noise and unlock again. The only sure way to go is to use the key. Since I have a '96 I don't think it is a door lock timer being that that problem was from '93 & '94 models. It is either an Actuator or Door Latch. Does anyone know how I can tell, and also how I can tell if is driver or passenger side related. I don't want to replace things that do not need replacing. I have read alot of postings on this problem, but haven't seen one like my issue, so please don't just post a link to fuzzycats. Thanks again for you help.

I had the same problem with my door locks. Besides the terrible electirical job done on the j30, I found it to be simply a lock relay. They go haywire. I expirienced the same symptoms as you are having, I replaced this part myself. i am terrible at explainging these things i will look for a tutorial on the net.

Really?? Just a Lock relay for around 20 bucks. You mean to you it dosn't sound like an actuator or latch, just a relay?

and thanks yodawill2000........

Sounds like the actuator in the door is out of adjustment, probably either from wear or coming loose.Has the door ever been unlocked by use of a coat hanger or slim-jim?

Now, be fair. They were trying to build a pocket XJ-6. No one told them to not try and copy the electrical system as well.

I have to agree. I've not seen many "modern" cars with so many common gremlins- window and sunroof motors/mechanicals, dash dimmers, radio displays, lock timer modules and that god-awful, no-excuse-for, misbegotten joke of a headlight relay.

Yes a slim-Jim was used before. If the acuator is out of adjustment, does it just need to be replaced?

Well, there's no way through internaweb chatmail to see what's bent or budged out of kilter from someone's fishing with a slim-jim to force a door lock. I'm afraid you're probably down to taking the door panel off and getting in with lights and mirrors to find broken, bent, shorted or otherwise futzed parts.
