Another exhaust question

Hope this one isnt too stupid but i'm just curious why/how using a single muffler like the one in this pic at/instead of the Y and then just pipes runing out the back would be a different than the y-pipe plus dual muffler that comes stock.Again, I apologize if this is a morons question but if you dont ask you'll never know... CRAP!! how do i attach a pic?

Simply put, asthetics. Some prefer the look of a dual outlet muffler, while some like the larger 3.5"-4.5" exits. I'd prefer larger single outlets, rather than the dual outlet look. The older BMW's and other Euro cars sported the dual outlet muffler look.
