Here is the story gang. I am the owner of a 97 turbo honda civic. I have spent a lot of time and money on this car for no real serious results. The manager at my local speed shop introduced me to the sr20 swap and I have done a little reading and pricing. I bought a 89 240 sx coupe with no sunroof and I have gutted the interior. I already have the suspension finished, Tein flex coil overs, cusco upper strut bar, and adjustable tension rods. I am probably going to keep the civic just long enough to finish the nissan and then buy something else. The nissan is only going to be sort of an ongoing project and is not going to be a daily driver. I have decided to buy a red top but I don't know whether to buy the front clip or just the motor swap itself(including wiring and everything else). What are the advantages either way? Is it worth spending the extra 800 for the whole clip? I also have a new flywheel, clutch, downpipe, shift kit, oil pans, and intake for the sr all brand new. How hard is the swap to do? I know my way around the garage but am a little scared of the wiring. If i don't figure something out I might just sell the nissan and try something else. Any info is greatly apreciated and sorry for such a long message.

wiring can be a *****, depending where the harness is cut...but heavythrottle.com does sell a wiring kit, which you send them your harness, and they adapt it for you.

its not a simple swap, but putting the motor in the car is easy : )

clip just includes parts like the radiator, dash, gauge cluster, etc, nothing you cant get, or go aftermarket with anyway, and higher shipping cost...the majority of people dont get clips, but a good amount of people doing the swaps at home do, for they dont want to worry about finding small parts that might not be included with just the motor, ie. intercooler, radiator, tach, etc.

welcome to the board.

"oil pans"....how many oil pans did you get? {confused}

that extra 800 you can get a good quality 2 row aluminum radiator, and some other goodies, ie downpipe, hotpipe, brakes , etc : )

anything else?

Just one oil pan (greddy). Sorry about that.

Once i get started I am going to do it right and in no hurry so if I buy the engine will I be able to fit better parts that would have been stock on the clip? I just read somethign about the drive shaft being to short on the 89-90 cars too. Anyone know anything about that?

Did I read wrong is it that '91+ S13s are easier to do a SR20DET swap with? Is this the case with suspension/brake swaps too?

What shops would you guys recommend I turn to for all my SR20 needs in S. Cali.?

Thanks in advance.

not sure what your asking..i have a 89 240 with an Sr and had no driveshaft issues. ( i think you may be refering to using a different diff ?)

yes, phase2motortrend are great, very nice, and well regaurded tuners in the 240 SR community. Talk to wayne first, he is a good guy.

I don't know what they said about the drive shaft. Just said it was too short but still would work. Must not be anything.

Hey torqueless, I live right near dublin, and would be willing to give you a hand, because I plan on doing the swap as well. Although I havn't decided between a CA or a SR, but most likely it'll be a CA. Anyway there are a few rollin' around in Columbus, I know of 1 SR and 2 CA's. Well PM me, maybe we can talk or get your project rollin', because I am not going to start mine until after the first of the year.

Thanks for the shop recommendations guys!

One more question, is installing the SR in a U.S. 240 a pain or is it straight forward? In other words, do you have to play with the motor mounts or worry about the steering column getting in the way?

From what I read, installing the engine myself would be the best way to go considering I have some mechanical instalation experience. Am I correct in assuming the only problem would be the wiring harness?

Since I really don't know much about wiring and am not too fond of splicing and reconnecting wires, I could just send it off to a shop to do the cutting, shortening, and extending of the harness for me right? Then, when I get it back, it would be a matter of plug and play right?

Any info. would be greatly appreciated.
