So I went driving my car last week lights started to flicker and when I shut it off it wouldnt start again so we popped started it and I drove it home. Finally got to try to look at it today well battery was dead so I put it on the charger for a while and it started up voltage meter read 12.7 turn on my lights (hids by the way) drops down to 10.2 figured it was alternator so I unhook the negative battery cable car still runs and now the voltage meter reads 11.3 now im really confused im guessing its the start of my alternator going anyone got any other ideas im gonna be ripping the motor hopefully next week so i would like to know what the problem might be so I can fix it whille the engine is out. p.s.- its an sr20det blacktop if it really matters

Take your alternator off and take it to a discount or autozone. They will tell you if theres something wrong with it.

any voltage reading off of an alternator less than 12 v is considered a drain on your battery. so i say replace your alternator and if that doesn't fix your problem check your engine grounds.

That exact same thing happened to another of my older 240's, it ended up being the alternator.

You shouldn't have to take it off. Autozone has a tool that they just hook to the battery while the car is running that reads the alternator signal.

same problem.. i replaced the battery just going at it not thinking.. and the advanced auto people cant check for a bad alternator if u got a bad battery.so i got a new battery by the next day it went bad too.. so went back and replaced the alternator... and got a new free battery(2 yr replacement) and its good now..
