If its on an engine lift just thread the flywheel bolts on and wrap a rope around them then tie it to the engine mount. Spin it till it tightens and then done. That's a way to do it when you don't have any other way to stop it without ruining the bolts.

eh? i'm talking about the crankshaft girdle...wrap a rope around the bolts and tie the rope to the engine mount? i don't even have a flywheel for it that's for once i get a transmission...

can someone help? again, like i said, when i cranked the crankshaft girdle bolts down, most of them were fine to factory spec however a few of them when tightened only past ~30nm the crank would not turn freely.

what should be done?

bump. got it figured out. swapped some bearings around and got everything torqued down and it fit right.

update:

rods!

pistons!

pistons on the rods!

pistons in.

notice the lack of exclamation on the last part - while installing piston #3, i scratched the crank journal to hell. i had a rag around the rod so that wouldn't happen but i guess it slipped out. SO i'm trying to find a local crankshaft. if anyone in the upstate SC area has one, i need it! or if you're willing to ship one i'll fund that as well.

about 90% certain i'm picking up the shell next weekend. the car already has a motor in it but i really just don't want to pull it out and tear it down to pull the crank out. plus, the cause of the "non-starting" condition is unknown, so i don't want to take a gamble and have to wait longer after i get the car and take the time to tear down the motor.

i'm still waiting on these jacklegs to send out my bearings. they told me they would go out on wednesday (fedex picked up thursday the 12th and it got there the 16th) but i haven't heard from them to get a tracking number or anything. if they aren't here by the end of next week, i'll be ordering another set and consider the $40 a loss.

more to come later.

AGAIN, i need a crankshaft. anyone with one i'd love to hear from you

edit: oh and should i do anything about the timing chain guides? i hear of people taking them out but which ones and what are the risks?

I like the eagle connecting rods, so well machined that you can barely see where they bolt together.

Whats that turbo compressor housing sitting on the work bench belong to?

from a t3/t4 .63 a/r garrett journal bearing turbo. bought it for $100 from a guy who said it had bad bearings. i tear it apart and find out it needs not only a rebuild kit (new bearings, which i knew i was going to do anyways), but a new compressor wheel, compressor back plate, and a turbine wheel. totals would be over $550 including the cost of the turbo. i just wanted to find a good, used turbo and throw in some new bearings and seals and call it a day.

the compressor backplate was bad because the bore where the "piston" ring on the thrust bearing fits into got reamed out when the bearings went bad. due to the excessive circular shaft play (not side to side), the compressor wheel's fins got a little flattened due to rubbing the inside of the inlet. FINALLY the turbine wheel essentially got melted when the lack of oil caused it to heat up. here it was:

compressor wheel: ($95 from gpopshop.com)

compressor backplate: ($50 from gpopshop.com, look at the inside of the bore)

and finally the turbine shaft: ($195 from gpopshop.com - gross)

there ya have it.

Looks like it sh&% itself. $100 is a little steep when all you got to salvage was a cartridge (possible) and the exhuast housing... That's turbo life for ya.

picking this one up this weekend:

no offense taken i'd be asking the same thing. i've been looking for one since about February. the engine doesn't run, but everything else works (power windows, lights, etc). The common rusty holes on the hatch have been ground out, but still need to be patched.

i *could* take a gamble and use the crankshaft from this one. i don't know what condition it's in and i really don't want to not only have to take it out, but get it mounted on my stand and take it apart, then remount my old one on the stand to finish assembly.

that's why i'd like a crankshaft. anyone has? =P
