well, since im a mechanic, i get called upon by all my friends to fix there cars.

one of them just bought a 91 supra turbo. well, i get commisioned to stop it from overheating. so i have him describe his problem [a new driver just learning how to drive stick, even though hes 22 years old]. he tells me that the car will rise up to temperature, hold at normal temp for a few minutes, then shoot up to hot.

so i tell him to go to the auto parts store and get the thermostat and gasket.

well, he returns with it, and i get to work. 10 minutes later, when im buttoning it back up, the top thermo housing bolt breaks when im tourquing it to 6 ft/lbs. ok, no big deal, some tread is sticking out so i can grab it with some vice grips. it needs a new bolt, no big deal. its an o-ring type themostat, so the one bolt is sealing it anyway.

now on to the fun part. he failed to get some anti-freeze at the parts store, so were off to exxon to get some.

so, as he's trying to show me that he can drive, the car starts knocking LOUD. im like "oh ****, somethings wrong. get out, im driving to exxon"

i drive it real easy so it doesnt knock to pieces. its starts smoking like a son of a ***** a block before the gas station. i pull in and shut it down. i let it sit for 10 minutes and then start looking it over. it turns out the lower radiator hose was disconnected completely, and the car had NO oil in it. it was being driven like that for days.

so i reconnect the hose, put three quarts of oil in it, and fill it up with water and coolant slowly. it took a half an hour before i could get more than a gallon of coolant in it without it spitting back at me.

i check the oil, the three quarts i put in it made the oil level barely touch the dipstick IT WAS PRACTICALLY EMPTY.

i start it up and after a few seconds, it stops knocking. i drove it back, and the motor was still strong and not knocking.

i gotta go check it out in an hour to see what else went wrong with it last night.

that 7M-GTE is a strong motor. i thought for sure it was gonna be toast, but i think the head gasket is still good, and i gotta see if theres metal in the oil.

i have the feeling im gonna be making a lot of money off this one...

your not kidding, when i saw the disconnected hose it was one of those moments where you cant believe what you see. he told me that he had added coolant the day before, i guess he didnt notice it pouring directly on the ground. thats how i noticed it.

i had asked him if it was leaking coolant before i changed the thermostat, he said no. i guess he responded correctly because it cant leak if its empty...

but how hard is it to pull the dipstick when your filling up the gas tank?

i have to keep track of how long the motor lasts. three of my other friends say 2 weeks. i give it a month.

yup. i got the bolt out last night, and changed the oil, filter, and coolant. the oil was more of a black sludge with some metal shavings. [ouch] i changed the plugs too, they were fried.

the motor still runs, but the turbo doesnt spool very well. [fried bearings]

motor doesnt knock, so i dont think it spun a bearing. its got compression, but not great [140,142,138,125,145,140]

oh well. at least it isnt my car. this supra used to belong to one of my other friends and was in great condition about a month ago, but he messed up the bumper and right fender in the first snowstorm a few weeks ago, got pissed off and sold the car to the current owner.

the car was leaking oil from the turbo drain, and i replaced the line about a month and a half ago then it wasnt loosing oil except for a little out of the valve cover. we told him to check the oil frequently, but thats what happens when you dont pay attention to those things.

buy it for 500 dollars, come on man, it'd be a sweet deal:D

pretty sad when people get cars like that with a lack of knowledge, I mean it's good that they show some interest, but damnit, start on something not turbo, not a very good beginner's car! Tell him he should sell it to you and that he should get a FWD Corolla:)

hahaha, i know, i was thinking about it, but i absolutely hate bodywork.

it needs a bumper, a right fender, and a passenger door and side skirt.

plus, im itching for something fast with room for more than two people. if i pick up the supra, it will just take attention away from the J.

speaking of which, im gonna be transporting the j next week up to my uncles house. i payed the fine and got my license back. im also not going to pay diesel and tolls to borrow a flatbed over the bridge and up the thruway, so im just gonna drive it up there unregistered. hopefully i dont get caught.
