well, since im a mechanic, i get called upon by all my friends to fix there cars.
one of them just bought a 91 supra turbo. well, i get commisioned to stop it from overheating. so i have him describe his problem [a new driver just learning how to drive stick, even though hes 22 years old]. he tells me that the car will rise up to temperature, hold at normal temp for a few minutes, then shoot up to hot.
so i tell him to go to the auto parts store and get the thermostat and gasket.
well, he returns with it, and i get to work. 10 minutes later, when im buttoning it back up, the top thermo housing bolt breaks when im tourquing it to 6 ft/lbs. ok, no big deal, some tread is sticking out so i can grab it with some vice grips. it needs a new bolt, no big deal. its an o-ring type themostat, so the one bolt is sealing it anyway.
now on to the fun part. he failed to get some anti-freeze at the parts store, so were off to exxon to get some.
so, as he's trying to show me that he can drive, the car starts knocking LOUD. im like "oh ****, somethings wrong. get out, im driving to exxon"
i drive it real easy so it doesnt knock to pieces. its starts smoking like a son of a ***** a block before the gas station. i pull in and shut it down. i let it sit for 10 minutes and then start looking it over. it turns out the lower radiator hose was disconnected completely, and the car had NO oil in it. it was being driven like that for days.
so i reconnect the hose, put three quarts of oil in it, and fill it up with water and coolant slowly. it took a half an hour before i could get more than a gallon of coolant in it without it spitting back at me.
i check the oil, the three quarts i put in it made the oil level barely touch the dipstick IT WAS PRACTICALLY EMPTY.
i start it up and after a few seconds, it stops knocking. i drove it back, and the motor was still strong and not knocking.
i gotta go check it out in an hour to see what else went wrong with it last night.
that 7M-GTE is a strong motor. i thought for sure it was gonna be toast, but i think the head gasket is still good, and i gotta see if theres metal in the oil.
i have the feeling im gonna be making a lot of money off this one...
