Recently purchased a 95 240sx SE and its making annoying sounds.

When accelerating a nice screaching sound is heard out of the center to rear of the car. Sound is the most loud in 1st and 2nd gear(5spd) 1k-3k when accelerating and a little while cruisn'. Durning acceleration the sound will come on at 1k and disappear at 3k.

Any ideas?

What should i look for when i get a chance to get under the car?

Thank You,BoBa

are you sure it's not coming out the front where your belts are? if it's comin from the middle to back of the car, the only thing that's around there should be your driveshaft. either the bearing for the driveshaft has gone or there's something (possibly part of the exhaust or muffler) hitting the driveshaft.

OK, I assume this is not just a case of your lead foot pounding the accelerator, causing the rear tires to loose traction and scream.

Now to be serious.... I agree, this sounds most like a slipping belt issue, but this would definitely be coming from under the hood.

If you are sure about it coming from the rear of the vehicle, you might want to check the u-joints on your drive shaft. These can also make interesting noises.

A good place to try and confirm where the sound is coming from is a road with concrete barriers or walls close to the edge of the lane (bridges or concrete tunnels sometimes work well for this). I find that driving along side the barrier/wall with the windows open sometimes helps to find the general area of the noise. The vehicle sounds are "reflected" by the hard surface beside the vehicle and can more easily be hear inside.

This may sound bizzarre, but it does work. I found this out by accident one day when I drove over a bridge with concrete "jersey" barriers. An annoying brake squeak I was sure was coming from the front of the vehicle could clearly be heard from the rear - - fixed.

Just a thought...

I actually do the same...it is not the belts for sure. can i try spraying some wd40 on some movable parts maybe it will clear the noise and i will know what it was?

i did this for a bad control arm on my eclipse to figure out what was making noise.

I don't imagine WD40 could hurt anything (besides making things messy), so it's worth a try. If the problem is with u-joints, or inside the differential itself, I would not expect the WD40 to effect anything, but certainly it's worth a shot.

So I assume it's not just you depositing a strip of your tires on the asphalt....

no its not my tires... i put on 350z alloys and they have brand new potenza tires, i dont really want to wear them that fast cuz i know i wont be spending 200 a tire when i replace them.
